This position is responsible for the welfare and safety of inmates while in the custody of the Ridgeland Police Department. The incumbent is also responsible for the cleanliness of the holding cells and booking area during assigned shift. Supervision and assignments are received from a superior both orally and in writing. Work is reviewed by superiors through observation, monitoring of operations, and the review of records and reports.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
The following minimum qualifications have been identified by subject matter experts (SME'S) who have supervised this position or functioned in the position; they are based upon job analysis information supplied by these SME'S. However, if a candidate believes he / she is qualified for the job although he / she does not have the minimum qualifications set forth below, he / she may request special consideration through substitution of related education and experience, demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Any request to substitute related education or experience for minimum qualifications must be addressed to the Human Resource Director, in writing, identifying the related education and experience which demonstrates the candidate's ability to perform all essential functions of the position. Education and / or experience : High school graduate from an accredited school or general education degree (GED). Working knowledge of care and treatment of persons held temporarily under police custody is preferred, but not required. Working knowledge of occupational hazards involved in the work and safety precautions for safe performance of the job is preferred, but not required. Basic knowledge of first aid methods and techniques. Ability to administer simple medications, as prescribed. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments Ability to think and act quickly, calmly and efficiently in emergency situations. Knowledge of evidence and property management systems as they relate to law enforcement and court services needs is preferred, but not required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively. Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Must be eligible to be bonded pursuant to applicable state laws and local ordinances. Jail Officer Training Certificate is preferred, but not required. Valid driver's license.

Corrective devices may be used to meet these physical requirements. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
