The primary focus of the role of Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist is to assist the Day Treatment Therapist in providing skill-building activities to severely emotionally disturbed children ages 3 to 6 years old. The MHRS serves as the secondary milieu group leader and provides a positive role model for the children to promote social, emotional, behavioral, and functional skills necessary for healthy development and social integration. This position assists the Day Treatment Therapist in planning, preparing, and implementing weekly and daily skill-building exercises, therapeutic activities, social and cognitive development plans for each child. The MHRS also leads two skill building activities per day to help clients learn tools necessary to improve their emotional and social functioning.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assists the Day Treatment Therapist in leading the milieu group as instructed by the DTI Therapist and DTI Program Supervisor.Assists the Day Treatment Therapist in providing group and individual therapeutic and skill-building activities focused on social, emotional, behavioral, and functional development.Assists the Day Treatment Therapist in developing behavior-shaping activities according to each individual client’s developmental level, goals, and treatment plan.Assists the Day Treatment Therapist in developing and implementing appropriate treatment objectives and interventions for each child on an ongoing basis.Contributes to the ongoing evaluation of behavior and progress for each client as part of a collaborative team.Collaborates with the Day Treatment team members (Day Treatment Therapist, Milieu Assistant, Program Supervisor) to provide appropriate interventions in the milieu setting according to each child’s individual treatment plan.Monitors children and models appropriate verbal and nonverbal responses.Assists in de-escalation of situations in which a child acts out. This may include monitoring brief “time-outs” or, as a last resort, physically redirecting or manually restraining a child using behavioral management techniques from Handle with Care training provided to all Day Treatment staff.Coordinates daily tasks with Milieu Assistant in order to ensure that the milieu is prepared for upcoming activities and projects.Assists team with preparation of materials for daily projects and activities.Participates as a member of the Day Treatment Team including attending and participating in team meetings, reviewing status and progress of clients, and providing suggestions for interventions to help promote follow-through within the milieu.Plans and implements activities that help develop various skills as programmatic needs arise.Provides transportation assistance with company-provided vehicles as necessary.Provides assistance and back up for other milieu team members.Completes all daily notes and Special Incident Reports as required by the program and submit to Program Supervisor within 24 hours.As a mandated reporter, must follow all reporting guidelines for child abuse and neglect and inform Program Supervisor of report.Reviews, monitors and files Day Treatment Intensive paperwork and as needed.Assists in coordinating and participating in field trips.General
