THE OPPORTUNITY

The VP, Underwriter will independently evaluate and / or supervise new, large, complex healthcare or rediscount transactions to determine the viability of the credit and makes appropriate recommendations based on Banc of California's lending criteria. This position will generally lead various underwriting endeavors and supervise others to ensure effective and efficient completion of required underwriting tasks.

The VP, Underwriter interacts and effectively communicates with members of the new business deal team and portfolio management (PM) while performing and overseeing assignments. The VP, Underwriter shall also possess the ability to perform and supervise new business underwriting and complex credit and collateral monitoring examinations (CCMEs) with limited supervision. Performs all duties in accordance with the Company's policies and procedures, all U.S. state and federal laws and regulations, wherein the Company operates.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Underwrite new business financing opportunities and perform / supervise CCMEs.

Effectively function as a member of the deal team to assess the credit worthiness of prospective borrowers.

Obtain an understanding of the proposed transaction and establish an appropriate and agreed-upon scope for diligence in conjunction with the Credit / Investment Officer (diligence may be performed on-site or remotely depending upon transaction circumstances).

Assess management, analyze historical and projected financial data and cash flows, and review business plans and industry trends.

Identify and analyze the key drivers of the prospective borrower's business.

Participate with PM in planning an effective and appropriate diligence scope to assess ongoing risk, business performance and / or compliance to the credit agreement.

Develop techniques and perform testing of assumptions and assertions of management during the diligence process to confirm reasonableness.

Identify credit and collateral risks and suggest mitigants and obviates. Apply appropriate asset-based lending techniques when evaluating collateral, inclusive of valuation analytics, inventory counts, etc. as applicable.

Oversee and assist in the preparation of appropriate workpapers to support analysis and supportive test work.

Prepare and / or review well-written reports documenting scope, key findings, recommendations, and results of testing and analysis performed, and ensure proper email storage and maintenance of all deliverable support.

Assess industry conditions / cycles and regulatory environment with emphasis on threats, risks, and exposure areas to the prospective borrower's ability to service debt.

Assess competitive environment, business and industry trends and the projected effect on the prospective borrower.

Assist in performing customer and vendor references.

Review third party diligence reports when provided or when requested.

Assess the appropriateness of scope and depth of work performed by third parties, including but not limited to appraisals, environmental reviews, sponsor related external studies, etc.

Identify credit issues and recommend appropriate follow-up as required to adequately address credit exposure and associated risk.

Effectively evaluate borrower's management team and operating structure.

Review credit agreement to ascertain the key components of the credit facility and reporting requirements, inclusive of covenant compliance.

Gain an understanding of the industry in which the client operates and its key drivers.

Develop and perform appropriate and sufficient testing of assumptions and assertions to confirm reasonableness. When applicable, confirm client's computation of covenants and borrowing base certificates are in compliance with loan documents and prudent lending practices, and validate and / or supervise, as needed, financial tracking data maintained by PM.

When leading any type engagement where assistance is provided from less experienced staff, provide supervision and mentoring.

Actively partakes and supervised special reviews, research and ad-hoc analytics as warranted.

Participate in credit committee meetings as appropriate.

Assist in the performance of performance improvement projects and best practice initiatives.

Maintain professional education to stay current with changing accounting / auditing standards and environment.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Minimum of 8-10 years' auditing / underwriting experience working in healthcare lending and / or rediscount loans required.

Experience in commercial finance / banking industry or accounting firm specializing in buy / sell side diligence of businesses or lenders preferred.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or similar field required or equivalent experience

Master's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field preferred

CPA designation preferred

Knowledge of healthcare lending, clinical compliance, and third party reimbursements

Knowledge of rediscount loans

Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Demonstrate highly effective leadership and supervisory skills with superior mentoring capabilities

Must be a self-starter and able to multi-task, work efficiently on own and in team environment, and be readily adaptable to change

Experience leading and overseeing complex multi-site engagements

Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal talents with ability to effectively communicate with both internal and external customers

SALARY RANGE

The base salary ultimately offered is determined through a review of education, industry experience, training, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant in alignment with market data and other factors.
