Job Summary

The Route Scheduler Technician works with various agencies to develop and maintain bus routes for the Anchorage School District. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements

The following are required :

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by courses in computers.

The following are preferred :

  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in general clerical work, including proficiency in Macintosh and Windows computer programs used within the Anchorage School District.
  • Knowledge of the Municipality of Anchorage street network.
  • Detailed geographic knowledge of the Anchorage, Chugiak / Eagle River, and Girdwood areas.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures, office machines, and filing systems.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and established procedures of the department.
  • Ability to work effectively under extreme pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively establish and maintain good public relations with ASD personnel and the public.
  • Essential Job Functions

  • Develops and maintains regular and special education school bus routing for ASD and contract operations by compiling and analyzing requests for individualized transportation for each qualifying regular and special education student.
  • Develops and maintains detailed routing maps for all routes, accounting for regular and special education students, and a timeline board of each school bus run.
  • Performs technical work requiring a thorough knowledge of federal and state laws, Department of Education regulations, department policies and procedures, and applicable labor contracts and agreements.
  • Processes, records, and files a variety of documents required for transportation.
  • Responsible for timely distribution of bus routes and related information for students to appropriate ASD staff and school bus contractors.
  • Conducts in-service training for drivers and attendants and other ASD staff when required.
  • Compiles and analyzes data submitted for summer school bus routes.
  • Develops, maintains, and assigns routes and detailed routing maps.
  • Coordinates with parents, principals, and program coordinators in resolving problems and complaints about regular and special education routes.
  • Maintains the Transportation Department's central filing system.
  • Acts as a resource for department staff members for resolution of problems concerning Macintosh or Windows hardware or software.
  • Interprets rules and regulations to the public in relation to the Transportation Department.
  • Assists in the development of departmental office procedures.
  • Develops forms when needed for use in office for filing and documentation purposes.
  • Physical / Mental Demands

    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his / her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

    Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

    While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
