Hour Media in Troy, Michigan, publisher of metro Detroit’s award-winning monthly city magazine, Hour Detroit , is looking for a collaborative writer and editor who has strong writing skills and digital media fluency. They should be comfortable with writing news and lifestyle articles as well as the ins and outs of content management, SEO, and social media. Candidates must also be familiar with and live in metro Detroit.

  • All candidates must submit a brief cover letter, resume, relevant work samples through LinkedIn or via email to kwalsh@hour-media.com.

Primary responsibilities include :

  • Write, assign, and post daily content for hourdetroit.com
  • Build web versions of print articles, including improving SEO with meta descriptions, keywords, alt tags, etc.
  • Write / curate and build Hour Detroit ’s newsletter.
  • Build out a monthly web calendar with both print and web-exclusive stories (and adjust it as new stories pop up).
  • Collaborate with Editor in Chief and Director of Digital Strategy on social media initiatives.
  • Monitor newsletter and web content analytics.
  • Review responses to stories on social media and website to inform digital editorial strategy.
  • Post daily articles for dbusiness.com, the website for Hour ’s sister magazine, DBusiness .
  • Other editorial duties as may be determined by management.

    • Skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Creative Writing, Media Studies / Digital Media, or related field of study
  • Three or more years of experience in digital journalism and editing.
  • Expertise in WordPress, Google Analytics, and HubSpot
  • Familiarity with InDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software is a plus
  • Proven multitasking ability on disparate tasks.
  • Clear, effective communication and a cool head under pressure.
  • A demonstrated sense of what makes something newsworthy and relevant to our audience.

    • This is a hybrid position, but candidates must be able to work full-time in our office in Troy, Michigan, if the situation calls for it.
