Salary : Starts at $17.19 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY :

Under general supervision of a Parks Supervisor, the Park Aide performs general and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks in and around District parks, buildings, and facilities in compliance with established maintenance and safety standards. Cleaning park bathrooms, facilities, opening and closing parks, assisting with District special events, pulling trash, work order data entry, working with the community, enforcing District policies, etc. Excellent customer service and communication skills are a must.

Essential Duties and RESPONSIBILITIES :

Include the following :

  • Cleans and maintains District grounds, facilities, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic areas, barbeque pits and maintenance shop according to established maintenance and safety standards. Picks up and disposes of debris and trash.
  • Performs work in construction, maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to the following : electrical, mechanical, gas and water, plumbing, concrete and asphalt work, roofing, painting, carpentry, welding, new construction or remodeling, landscaping, pest control, lawn maintenance, and plant and tree care.
  • Operates vehicles, tractors, trenchers, rototillers, chainsaw, hand tools, and other light to heavy equipment. Maintains vehicles and equipment on a regular basis in compliance with established maintenance standards.
  • Ensures that restrooms and District facilities are adequately stocked with supplies.
  • Clean and lock park restrooms.
  • Open and close District parks.
  • Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
  • Cuts and hauls trees, shrubs, turf and weeds. Rakes leaves and hoes plating beds. Plants, waters, prunes, fertilizes, aerates and performs other tasks related to the care of trees, shrubs, flowers and turf. Edges around walks, planting beds, walls, fences and related ground areas.
  • Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes.
  • Operates vehicles, tractors, trenchers, rototillers, chainsaws, hand tools, and other light to heavy equipment. Maintains vehicles and equipment on a regular basis in compliance with established maintenance standards.
  • Ensures that restrooms and District facilities are adequately stocked with supplies. Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
  • Performs heavy physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy supplies and using shovels and other tools and equipment to dig holes, trenches and ditches.
  • Answers questions and provides direction and information to the public regarding park ordinances, rules and regulations. Insures that order is maintained in District parks and facilities, and reports injuries, accidents, vandalism, area misuse, and other undesirable activities to the appropriate authority.
  • May be responsible for routine inspection of District grounds, facilities, and / or playgrounds as assigned. Performs required maintenance or repairs to correct issues and documents actions taken. Reports problems and safety issues to supervisor.
  • Maintains written records and reports as assigned.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions and safety equipment related to all work performed.
  • Operates computer to access email and intranet site for employee updates and work requests.
  • Assists with District events as needed which may require working off hours and weekends.
  • Communicates to interact effectively with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates, volunteers and the general public sufficient to convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required.
  • Ability to get along and work effectively with others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

This job has no supervisory duties.

Education and / or Experience :

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. One (1) year of experience in park maintenance or related experience in semi-skilled construction field or equivalent training and / or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position.

Additional Skills and abilities :

Ability to follow oral and written direction. Ability to proactively respond to park and facilities maintenance issues and problems and provide strong customer service. Knowledge of techniques and equipment used in the maintenance of grounds and facilities. Ability to learn and maintain assigned parks and facilities according to established maintenance and safety standards. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to clean, maintain, and repair facilities and grounds. Ability to operate, maintain and repair hand and power tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of facilities and grounds. Ability to follow safety practices and procedures related to the use of a variety of equipment, power tools and hand tools. Knowledge of auto mechanics, vehicle operation and safety. Ability to perform heavy physical labor, such as lifting (up to 100 pounds), carrying heavy objects, using a shovel and other equipment to dig. Ability to climb a ladder and work at heights. Knowledge of the operation of a personal computer and office equipment. Skill in diffusing user problems in parks and facilities through the use of effective communication skills. Ability to recognize and report hazards or safety issues in parks and facilities. Ability to analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions and recommend or implement effective courses of action. Ability to accurately complete paperwork, including timesheets, reports and forms.

Language Skills :

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical SKILLS :

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability :

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :

Must possess and maintain a valid California class C drivers license, proof of personal vehicle insurance and a satisfactory driving record are required. American Red Cross certification (varies by program, First Aid and CPR certifications required). At the option of the appointing authority persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certifications or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment.

Computer SKILLS :

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, the Microsoft Office Suite of products and possess typing skills of at least 40-50 wpm. Knowledge of basic office equipment should include : Internet and email, copy and fax machines, postage meter, telephone and answering machine.

May be exposed to constant vibration of equipment for prolonged periods of time. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting and performing work activities, operating vehicles, tools and equipment, and preparing paperwork and reports. Performs heavy physical labor, such as lifting (up to 100 pounds), carrying heavy objects, and using a shovel and other equipment to dig. Climbs ladder and works at heights. Works for prolonged periods of time in sun, heat, inclement weather. Possible exposure to traffic and other potential hazards. Exposure to fumes, dust, and air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation.

Work ENVIRONMENT :

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Typically works outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to sun, heat and inclement weather. Possible exposure to traffic and other potential hazards. Regularly works inside and maintains District facilities. The incumbent may apply herbicides, insecticides and pesticides, cleaning and lubricating chemicals and ingredients which would expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb up ladders and perform work at heights. May be assigned to work weekends, holidays and irregular hours based on District scheduling needs. May be assigned to work during emergencies, seasonally-caused circumstances, or special projects and / or events in varying climate and temperature conditions.
