About the Role
The Company is seeking a General Counsel to serve as its chief legal officer, with a focus on managing and overseeing all legal affairs. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing proactive and strategic legal advice to the President, Board of Trustees, and senior administration, as well as identifying, evaluating, and managing legal risks across the institution. This role involves drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of complex contracts and agreements, ensuring institutional compliance with a wide range of federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and supporting governance activities. The General Counsel will also be involved in employment and student affairs, litigation and dispute resolution, and policy and training initiatives. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school, active membership in good standing with a state bar, and a minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with a preference for those with a background in higher education or nonprofit law. The role requires expertise in areas such as employment, education, contracts, governance, Title IX, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving. A strong commitment to the mission and values of the company and the Seventh-day Adventist Church is essential, and prior experience in a similar legal role within a higher education or faith-based institution is a plus.
