Engineer I / Engineer, Operations - Oahu
The P RH OPERATING PLANNING Department of the P SYSTEM OPERATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has one management vacancy available. This posting seeks to fill at either the Engineer I or Engineer, Operations; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.
Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, provides engineering analysis and technical support of power system operation to ensure high service reliability and operational safety. Completes assessments on the performance of current and future generation equipment; feasibility assessments of new generation technologies for integration into the system. Utilizes continuous improvement best practices such as LEAN Six Sigma to enhance and achieve high performance with a safety mindset and operational excellence; and practice our Company's service promise and standards, and core Company values.
Performs operational planning studies of existing generation, transmission, and distribution system assets for planned outages, contingencies, and operational problems. Investigates and evaluates abnormal voltages, equipment loading and overload capabilities; initiates and follows up on corrective action. Provides operational input in performing and reviewing future generation, transmission, and distribution asset proposals and planning studies. Travels to field sites, as required.
Prepares generating unit operating schedule to meet forecasted peaks with adequate operating reserves and meet operating restrictions. Tracks daily system demand, analyzes trends, and forecasts system peaks. Obtains and evaluates status of operating capabilities, limitations, and outages of all generating units; prepares daily capacity and equipment outage reports. Provides generation and system information required by the City, State and Federal Agencies. Supports the planning and integration of renewable energy resources into existing and / or new generation equipment. Develops solutions to grid management and control tool issues. Manages growth of distributed energy resources through the assessment of impacts to the electrical system and development of solutions to maintain the grid stability and safety.
Provides support for the System Operation Department planning processes through analysis of operating performance parameters and providing input into the prediction models such as production simulations. Provides analysis of the production simulation results and evaluates the level of confidence for the model outputs. Maintains and tunes operating system (e.g., EMS, OMS, etc.) engineering models and engineering applications.
Informs and advises the Engineering and Planning Departments of immediate and anticipated problems on the system which requires design or planning corrections and improvements. Reviews and comments on Engineering / Planning studies, designs, and drawings for system improvements. Coordinates and assists with commissioning and completing system and power plant related projects.
Performs post-disturbance analyses of major outages and proposes improvements to restoration sequences and other operating procedures. Investigates and provides accurate information on specific events affecting the system. Provides Corporate Communication, Regulatory, Customer Service, and Energy Services Departments with information on interruptions and emergency outages. Investigates and takes appropriate action to resolve customer complaints, problems, or questions. Contributes information to assist Risk Management Divisions investigations on claims. Performs field checks as required.
Provides after-hour consultation to assist dispatch personnel in resolution of power system operating problems and assists in storm or large outage situations. Serves as a back-up for the Operations Planning Manager. Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
Bachelor's degree in engineering with emphasis in electrical power systems analysis is highly desirable. Working knowledge of utility planning principles, including, but not limited to, electric power system generation, transmission, and distribution planning or equivalent utility work experience. Working knowledge of utility economic analyses, environmental and other state and federal laws and regulations as related to the company's corporate plans and Energy Planning processes. Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications to include word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, databases, and specialized load flow and resource planning / optimizing models.

Excellent analytical, organizational, conceptual, and problem-solving skills to handle various complex projects and programs. Strong project management and teamwork skills, including the ability to set goals and objectives, design processes and execute accordingly in order to achieve desired results. Ability to establish long range plans for the generating assets and develop a portfolio of options for existing and new generating assets. Demonstrated ability to develop processes for assessing options and formulating recommendations for plans and projects. Ability to develop detailed and complex plans, such as an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), utilizing long term planning skills.
Extensive (8+) years of experience in one or more of the following areas : Design or operations of utility generation or T&D systems. Experience in power generation engineering and design. Experience in system operations. Professional Engineer Registration in the State of Hawaii.

Hiring Range : The hiring range for the Engineer I position is $78,000 to $99,600. The hiring range for the Engineer, Operations position is $107,700 to $139,800. The person selected will be placed according to his / her skills and qualifications.
