Software Engineer

The Personal Lines IT organization is expanding our Rating and Pricing team as part of a major transformational project to modernize our premium calculation software. We have implemented a successful Proof of Concept and are now beginning the process of expanding our team size to support both our current capabilities and build out the new technology offering. All candidates for our team must possess a strong Agile mindset and experience, as the team will be self-organizing and iterating over the best way to deliver on a wide range of current and future state applications. Other non-negotiable skills will be an ability to ask informed questions, communicate across a diverse audience of IT and business partners, and to display comfort with challenging past conventions.

In this capacity you will be responsible for helping with the design, development, and continuous integration of testing suites for a wide variety of applications; covering web-based applications, APIs, batch & data management, and SaaS offerings. Other responsibilities will include :

  • Documenting testing requirements and identifying both technical and testing debt within the testing domain
  • Work with our business and requirements partners to accurately identify the challenges that our consumers are facing
  • Provide estimates for testing work on projects and build lists that contain assumption and pre-conditions that are necessary for overall success
  • Assist in the design of solutions that will not only meet the business needs but also have high sustainability and maintainability for our team members
  • Champion improvements and quantify their benefits for priority against business deliverables
  • Technologies domains include : Selenium based testing, API validation, Test data generation, Web based testing (Cypress), Testing coverage and traceability

This role will be filled in a hybrid capacity, with in-office collaboration in our Columbus, OH office 2 days per week.

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and / or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you'll code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.
  • Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.
  • Adopts continuous improvement and learning.
  • Handles project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.
  • Typical skills and experiences include :

  • Education : Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
  • Experience : One or more years of technology experience.
  • Knowledge, Abilities and Skills : Proficiency of at least one programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, etc. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Good problem-solving skills. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance / financial services industry knowledge a plus.

  • Working Conditions : Office environment may vary based on team and / or location. Associates may have on-call responsibility after normal working hours and / or on weekends.
