Job Summary :
The surgical technician specializes in assisting eye surgeons with the instrumentation and technical aspects of the operative event. Responsible for rendering professional care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in accordance with established procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities :
Does not oversee other staff.
Duties / Responsibilities :
Identifies, selects and coordinates equipment, instrumentation and supplies requiredAssists in preparation of room, room turnover cleaning, and terminal cleaning; restocking as requiredOpens” packs and instrument traysScrubs, gowns and gloves according to procedurePrepares work areas by draping, preparing and testing equipment and organizing instrumentationAssists in establishing, monitoring and maintaining sterile fieldAssists physician as directed intraoperativelyKeeps field clean and free of used sponges, suture ends and instrumentsWatches surgeons hand signals and responds appropriatelyCares for surgical equipment and instruments and manages suppliesDemonstrates knowledge of and adheres to the Code of Conduct and complies with center policies and proceduresDemonstrates an attitude that is caring, respectful, sensitive, tactful, compassionate, empathetic, and tolerantProvides a safe environment for the patientCommunicates safety concerns appropriately, following Chain of CommandLegibly documents when appropriate based on Center policy / procedurePromotes patient and physician satisfactionUses proper cleaning and sterilization techniques as specific in the policy and procedures and per manufacturer’s instructions for usePractices appropriate aseptic techniques and sterile processesWears appropriate Personal Protected Equipment (PPE)Observes universal precautionsRefers situations beyond ability or function to proper personAttends all required educationRegular and predictable attendanceAssists with the utilization of protective padding specific to patient’s skin integrity status and position for surgery or procedures and maintains patient’s proper body alignment as determined by procedurePlans for proposed surgical intervention by selecting appropriate equipment and supplies following physician preferenceAssists RN in the performance of duties assignedProvides input to the circulating nurse in the identification of patient problemsPerforms item count to include, but not limited to, sponges, sharps and instruments, pre, intra, and post operatively and takes appropriate action if count is not acceptableEnsures availability of appropriate supplies and equipment intra-operativelyLabels medications on the sterile field per Center policy / procedureInitiates corrective action for breaks in sterile techniqueHandles tissue specimens correctly and accurately according to policy and proceduresFollows standards for sharps safety according to facility policy and procedureFollows standard for electrosurgical safety according to facility policy and procedureFollows standards for disposal of biohazard waste according to Center policy and procedureOperates specialty equipment per manufacturer’s instructions for useAssists with the orientation and training of new personnelActively participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activitiesActively participates in the time outAdheres to safety policies and practices good body mechanics and ergonomicsFollows all rules and regulations for PHI and HIPAA protections of patient informationFollows all policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, attendance, timeliness, and safeguarding confidential informationReports incidents in a timely mannerPromotes patient and employee safety and communicates concerns appropriately, following Chain of CommandAttends in-service programs as requestedPerforms other related duties as directedRequired Skills / Abilities :
Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to implement principles of aseptic and sterile techniqueUnderstanding of principles of surgical positioningKnowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment use and careKnowledge of surgical procedures and basics of care to include anesthesia and potential complicationsRecognition of signs and symptoms of emergency situations and interventionsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percentages.Education and Experience :
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or have vocational training that qualifies under state grandfathering rulesHolds and maintains a surgical technologist certification issued by a nationally accredited certifying organization for surgical technologists or obtain such certification within 12 months of graduation of an accredited Surgical Technology program or meet grandfathering clause by providing documentation showing that the person practiced surgical technology during at least two of the three years immediately preceding January 1, 2017At least one (1) year previous experience in surgery or prior on-the-job scrub experience
