    Temporary On-Site Mental Health Counselor (3-4 month project)

    Position Overview : The On-Site Mental Health Counselor plays a vital role in supporting employees' emotional and mental well-being at a client company location (or multiple locations). This role involves building trusted relationships through one-on-one counseling, group sessions, and ongoing wellness programming designed to enhance resilience and mitigate daily stressors related to work and personal life. The counselor provides compassionate support for personal, family, and workplace concerns, helping employees feel more supported and empowered to perform at their best. This position reports to a supervisor at Health Advocate while working closely with client contacts daily.

    Key Responsibilities :

    1. Individual Counseling & Support

  • Conduct scheduled and on-demand one-on-one counseling sessions.
  • Provide immediate, in-the-moment support as appropriate.
  • Perform initial intake assessments and document case information in the Care Management System.
  • Deliver short-term, solution-focused interventions and well-being strategies.
  • Offer consultations, referrals, and appropriate recommendations based on clinical needs.
  • Assist employees with referrals to mental health providers covered by their insurance when clinically appropriate.
  • 2. Mental Health Wellness Programming

  • Develop and lead mental health wellness sessions, including educational workshops and training sessions.
  • Facilitate group wellness activities such as peer support groups, team-building exercises, and engagement events.
  • Implement creative intervention practices, such as guided mindfulness meditation and mindful movement exercises.
  • Connect employees with relevant wellness resources and support tools.
  • 3. On-Site Staff Support & Crisis Intervention

  • Assess crisis situations and provide appropriate intervention, including urgent support and disruptive event response.
  • Offer consultation to client leadership on employee safety concerns and workplace behavior issues.
  • Participate in monthly business reviews with client leadership.
  • 4. Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Engage in regular supervision and consultation to enhance service quality and case management.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of client interactions and interventions.
  • Ensure professional licensing and credentials remain in good standing.
  • Adhere to attendance expectations and be prepared to work as scheduled.
  • Provide support for different work shifts or crisis events as needed.
  • Hours / Shifts

    Rotating schedule

    Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday alternating each week (12.5 hour shifts).

    Minimum Qualifications :

    Education :

  • Master's degree in a behavioral health discipline (Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related human services field).
  • Active state licensure as a Professional Counselor, Marriage & Family Therapist, or Social Worker.
  • Experience :

  • Minimum of three years of post-graduate experience providing direct mental health services, including assessment and case management.
  • Experience with brief interventions, employee assistance programs (EAPs), occupational health, or community mental health is preferred.
  • Prior experience delivering presentations, consulting with leadership teams, and facilitating group wellness activities is a plus.

    Physical Requirements :

    This position requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the workday. While performing counseling and wellness activities, the counselor will be on their feet for extended periods, conducting group sessions or engaging in one-on-one interactions. The role also requires occasional lifting of materials and setting up wellness program activities or equipment. Frequent use of a computer for documentation, communication, and resource management is necessary, involving tasks such as typing, using a mouse, and reading information on a screen. The position also involves regular phone and video communication for counseling sessions, consultations, and coordination with clients.

    Mental and Cognitive Requirements :

    The role demands strong cognitive focus and attention to detail, particularly when assessing individual needs, creating tailored interventions, and managing cases. The counselor must demonstrate critical thinking skills to provide effective solutions for employees' mental health and wellness needs. The ability to remain calm and make quick, appropriate decisions during crisis situations is essential. Strong communication skills-both verbal and written-are crucial for counseling, facilitating group sessions, and collaborating with colleagues and client leadership. The ability to maintain emotional resilience and provide compassionate care while managing multiple tasks is essential.

    Work Environment :

    This position is on-site, requiring the counselor to be physically present at the client location(s). The environment will be dynamic, with a variety of tasks ranging from individual counseling sessions to leading group wellness activities. The workspace should be set up to allow for confidential and comfortable interactions with employees, ensuring privacy during counseling sessions. The role may also require occasional travel between locations depending on the number of client sites the counselor supports. The position involves interaction with employees across different departments and functions, and the counselor must adapt to the work culture of each location.

  • Physical Requirements :

    This position is primarily on-site and requires the ability to move throughout the workplace to provide in-person counseling and wellness support. The role involves periods of sitting for one-on-one or group sessions, as well as standing or light movement during group activities, workshops, and team-building events. Essential physical functions include speaking, hearing, and manual dexterity for documenting case notes, navigating computer systems, and facilitating wellness interventions. Occasional lifting of light materials (up to 15 pounds) may be needed for wellness activities or event setup. Frequent use of a computer is required, including typing, mouse navigation, and viewing digital content. Visual acuity is necessary for reading client records, electronic documentation, and conducting virtual sessions when needed.

    Mental and Cognitive Requirements :

    The role requires strong emotional resilience, active listening, and the ability to assess and respond to sensitive mental health concerns. Counselors must exercise sound clinical judgment in crisis situations, maintain professional boundaries, and uphold confidentiality. The ability to develop therapeutic rapport, apply evidence-based interventions, and manage documentation with accuracy is essential. The role also requires facilitation skills for group sessions and the ability to consult with leadership.

    Work Environment :

    This position is fully on-site and embedded within the Trust and Safety operational environment. The counselor must be comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced setting that may include exposure to discussions of distressing content. The workspace includes a private, designated office for confidential counseling and group programming, with access to standard office equipment and secure data systems.
