Position Summary
The Controller is a key member of the executive management team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, job costing, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. This individual plays a critical role in supporting strategic decisions through data-driven financial analysis and ensuring the financial health of the business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee daily operations of the accounting department including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and banking
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, including job cost reports and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable local / state / federal regulations
- Coordination with our accountant, our 401k plan administrator, our insurance agents, and our bonding agent
- Support of all customer prequalification processes and questionnaires
Construction Job Costing & Project Accounting
Maintain detailed cost tracking on construction projects and service contractsCollaborate with project managers to ensure proper billing, change orders, and forecastingReview project profitability and support project budgeting and estimatingBudgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow
Lead annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processesMonitor cash flow, manage lines of credit, and oversee collectionsIdentify financial trends, risks, and opportunities to guide company strategyInternal Controls & Process Improvement
Maintain and enhance internal controls to safeguard company assetsImprove efficiency of accounting systems, ERP usage, and reporting toolsEnsure compliance with insurance, bonding, licensing, and tax filing requirementsTeam Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise and develop accounting staffServe as a financial partner to ownership and other department headsLiaise with external auditors, banks, bonding agents, and CPAsQualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction or mechanical contracting environmentStrong understanding of construction accounting (percentage-of-completion, WIP, retainage, job costing)Proficiency in construction ERP / accounting softwareAdvanced Excel skills and ability to analyze complex dataExcellent leadership, communication, and organizational skillsPreferred Experience
Experience in both contracting (HVAC / plumbing install) and service (HVAC repair & maintenance) environmentsFamiliarity with Deltek ComputerEase ERP / accounting software preferredUnderstanding of lien waivers, AIA billing, and progress payment applicationsExperience working with bonding and insurance companiesBenefits
