Position Summary

The Controller is a key member of the executive management team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, job costing, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. This individual plays a critical role in supporting strategic decisions through data-driven financial analysis and ensuring the financial health of the business.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and banking
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, including job cost reports and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable local / state / federal regulations
  • Coordination with our accountant, our 401k plan administrator, our insurance agents, and our bonding agent
  • Support of all customer prequalification processes and questionnaires

Construction Job Costing & Project Accounting

  • Maintain detailed cost tracking on construction projects and service contracts
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure proper billing, change orders, and forecasting
  • Review project profitability and support project budgeting and estimating
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow

  • Lead annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes
  • Monitor cash flow, manage lines of credit, and oversee collections
  • Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities to guide company strategy
  • Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and enhance internal controls to safeguard company assets
  • Improve efficiency of accounting systems, ERP usage, and reporting tools
  • Ensure compliance with insurance, bonding, licensing, and tax filing requirements
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and develop accounting staff
  • Serve as a financial partner to ownership and other department heads
  • Liaise with external auditors, banks, bonding agents, and CPAs
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
  • Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction or mechanical contracting environment
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting (percentage-of-completion, WIP, retainage, job costing)
  • Proficiency in construction ERP / accounting software
  • Advanced Excel skills and ability to analyze complex data
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Preferred Experience

  • Experience in both contracting (HVAC / plumbing install) and service (HVAC repair & maintenance) environments
  • Familiarity with Deltek ComputerEase ERP / accounting software preferred
  • Understanding of lien waivers, AIA billing, and progress payment applications
  • Experience working with bonding and insurance companies
