Position Summary

This is a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) position through the end of the 2025 / 2026 school year. The above salary references a 1.0 FTE salary for the full school year. Anticipated daily schedule : Monday through Friday 8-4.

The School-Based Mental Health Therapist works under the direction of Prevention Services and Mental Health Administrator. The Therapist's primary role is to provide linguistically and culturally attuned Tier 2A, targeted mental health services to students in accordance with Eugene 4J's Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Mental Health Model. Therapist's focus includes furnishing short duration, one-on-one and small group interventions to those in need of emotional, social, behavioral, or relational support. Therapists make referrals to community partners for students requiring higher levels of care (Tier 2B and 3), coordinate student mental health / substance use services with local mental health agencies, refer caregivers and families to external resources, and address barriers to accessing equitable care. Therapists collaborate with school administrators and staff in the implementation of school-wide and group-level prevention activities including professional development for school staff, parents, and school volunteers to increase mental health literacy and skills. They are key partners in interdisciplinary student intervention teams, suicide evaluations, behavioral safety assessments, support / safety plans, and student re-entry plans. Therapists support critical incident response as assigned. Therapists practice in compliance with federal and state law, school district policies and administrative regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position has the following expectations and prerequisite abilities.

  • Present self and 4J in a professional manner including : in oral and written communication, professional disposition when working with others and maintaining professional dress standards.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, disseminate, and effectuate verbal or written communication and directives to a diverse group of administrators, staff, and the broader district community.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism, integrity, dependability and maintain a high level of understanding, implementing, and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA and adherence to the competent and ethical educator practices. (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-0045)
  • Promotion of equity and diversity in all settings and processes and a commitment to anti-racists principles.
  • Maintain compliance with state and federal laws governing all aspects of our agency including ORS, OAR, IDEA, FOIA, and CIPA.
  • Exceptional prioritization of tasks, timely completion of work assignments, ability to take the initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates respectful, flexible and effective teambuilding skills of cooperation, communication and active participation.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives, find requested data and present in user-friendly formats for internal and public distribution.
  • Maintain regular attendance at work. Be punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.
  • In depth understanding of the onset and course of mental illness including risk and protective factors, social contributors, and appropriate intervention strategies across the youth developmental continuum.
  • Exceptional clinical skill in delivering strengths-based, equity-centered, trauma-informed brief interventions to youth ages 5-19.
  • Knowledge of the uses and effects of psychotropic medications, and illicit substances.
  • Significant fluency and expertise in conducting clinical interviews and informal assessments.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, legal forms and procedures and district administrative policies related to furnishing school-based mental health services.
  • Detailed understanding of child and adolescent cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral development.
  • Developed skills and expertise providing suicide evaluations, crisis response and safety and support plans.
  • Established skill working in collaborative teams to develop, implement, and monitor clinical referrals, and treatment, support, and re-entry plans.
  • Strong case management organizational skills.
  • Uses digital communication with caregivers and students ONLY for the purpose of coordination, not case consultation or check-ins. Text and email may only be used to communicate immediate case needs to 4J administrators or staff.
  • Participates in required meetings and trainings related to the position
  • Maintains required licenses / certifications and successfully completes required trainings for the position
  • Effectively utilizes the District's electronic systems and applications related to the position

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensing Requirements

  • Valid Oregon TSPC license with an endorsement as a School Counselor, School Psychologist, or School Social Worker, or
  • Valid National Association of School Psychologist licensure, or
  • Valid Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP), or
  • Valid Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or
  • Valid Licensed Psychologist.
  • Experience

    Four (4) years providing direct psychological interventions in a Mental Health setting Up to two (2) years of graduate professional education may be substituted for the experience requirement on a year for-year basis.

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required clinical knowledge and skill may be considered qualifying as determined by Human Resources.

    Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon State Police Department and the FBI through a process authorized by the Eugene School District 4J. Applicants would be responsible for the one-time fingerprint clearance fee.
