Responsibilities
- Begin your career by qualifying through the shipyards start-of-the-art welding school.
- Use a variety of welding filler metals and processes to perform structural and pipe welds throughout all phases of ship construction.
- Weld in tack, fillet, and full penetration welds on steel foundations and joints for aircraft carriers and submarines.
- Employ SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding processes and perform welding in all positions using manual and mechanized techniques.
- Meet stringent nondestructive testing requirements, including visual inspection, ultrasonic inspection, and radiographic inspection.
- Receive further training in certified visual inspection, fire watch protocols, carbon arcing, and troubleshooting minor welding equipment issues.
- Work in conditions that include various weather, heights on scaffolding, and confined spaces; maintain safety, precision, and adaptability.
- Pass a 3-week unpaid training program (120 hours) and a physical agility test; undergo background investigation and drug screen as required.
- Be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, climb daily; lift at least 40 pounds; perform overhead work; work overtime as needed; be clean shaven to wear a respirator; and work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
- Be able to work at extreme heights and in small, tight, confined spaces; be willing to work any shift.
Qualifications
