Purpose

The Director of Nursing (DON) provides strategic and operational leadership for nursing services at University Health Services (UHS). Serving as a key member of the UHS and Healthyhorns leadership teams, the DON ensures delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nursing operations and workflows. The DON leads a team of Assistant Directors of Nursing and oversees the Staff Education & Infection Prevention and Safety Coordinator, partnering with the Chief Medical Officer and the Assistant Director of Quality Management to drive excellence in clinical operations, patient safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Staff Management
  • Provide overall leadership for all nursing personnel, including four Assistant Directors of Nursing, nursing staff (including medical assistants), and specialized functions (staff education & infection prevention).

    Support ADONs to recruit, hire, orient, develop, mentor, evaluate and, when necessary, discipline nursing staff in accordance with institutional policies.

  • Collaborate with ADONS to establish staffing models, monitor nursing competencies, adjust staffing and assignments to meet patient care and operational demands.
  • Promote a positive work environment that fosters professional growth, teamwork, and a culture of service excellence and student-centered care.
  • Clinical Operations, Quality of Care, & Risk Management
  • Work with ADONs to ensure nursing workflows support efficient and effective care delivery, excellent student experience, and high standards of quality and safety.

  • Lead the review, documentation, and resolution of clinical nursing incident reports and compliance with safety protocols. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify patterns, implement corrective actions, and mitigate risks.
  • Lead the development, review, and updates / revisions for nursing policies and procedures, contribute to the workflow for other UHS and Healthyhorns policies that involve clinical and administrative operations.
  • As a member of the Point and Click EHR (PNC) committee, represent nursing-related concerns in the electronic health record system. Collaborate with the Healthyhorns Data and Health Information Technology and Security (HITS) teams to recommend and implement updates.
  • Work in conjunction with the CMO and interdisciplinary teams to design, implement and refine nursing practice protocols, standing orders, and care pathways appropriate to the college health setting.
  • Plan, develop and interpret nursing chart review activities.
  • Partner with the Staff Education & Infection Prevention and Safety Coordinator to monitor infection control practices and training, evaluate outcomes, and respond to incidents or adverse events.
  • Ensure nursing services comply with applicable regulatory / licensing requirements and accreditation standards relevant to outpatient / college health settings.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Quality Management on continuous quality improvement initiatives within nursing operations.
  • Participate in or lead committees and workgroups to drive improvements in nursing practice, safety culture, student satisfaction, and operational performance.
  • Maintain current CLIA certification for point-of-care lab testing by monitoring compliance activities, coordinating renewal processes, and verifying documentation.
  • Collaboration & Interdisciplinary Partnerships
  • Attend leadership meetings (including Med Exec, UHS Senior Administrative Staff, UHS Management Team, Healthyhorns Leadership Team, clinic leadership teams, and other interdisciplinary committees as assigned), contributing nursing perspective to strategic planning, service development and care coordination across disciplines. Co-chair the Clinical Management Team meetings with the CMO.

  • Collaborate closely with the Assistant Director for Quality Management and ensure coordinated efforts between nursing operations and quality / compliance initiatives.
  • Liaise with other campus units (e.g., LWC, CMHC, RecSports, Texas Global, etc.) when appropriate to promote integrated care and seamless student health services.
  • Administrative, Financial & Resource Management
  • Collaborate with AVP and the finance team to support nursing operations through effective budget management and resource allocation. Ensure cost-effective utilization of resources while maintaining high quality care.

  • Ensuring appropriate nursing coverage and efficient operations through oversight of staff scheduling, clinic flow, capacity planning.
  • Utilize data (volume, staffing, quality, productivity metrics) to inform decision-making, identify opportunities for improvement, and report performance to senior leadership.
  • Lead coordination efforts for nursing-services related contracts and serve as a lead communicator with partners at Triage logic, School of Nursing, SAFE Alliance, and LYFT.
  • Coordinate after-hours nurse advice coverage and serve as the point of contact with St. David's for staffing needs during off-hours.
  • Strategic Planning
  • In conjunction with UHS leadership and ADONS, develop nursing strategic goals and objectives aligned with UHS / Healthyhorns priorities and evolving primary care models.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance nursing services, expand access, integrate new programs and optimize care delivery in the college setting.
  • Monitor trends in outpatient nursing, ambulatory care, student health, and apply evidence-based best practices to guide service design and implementation.
  • Maintain a consultative role in flu vaccine outreach and other mass-vaccination or public health efforts. Liaise with campus stakeholders when appropriate.
  • Education & Staff Development
  • The Staff Education & Infection Prevention and Safety Coordinator will operate under the DON's oversight to coordinate training, infection prevention education, and continuing education programs to ensure that nursing staff participate in orientation, ongoing education, professional development, and competency assessment.

  • Foster nursing excellence by supporting professional certifications, involvement in nursing associations, and leadership development.
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight to the Clinic Volunteer Program and related student involvement activities in the UHS clinics.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Five years of experience as a licensed Registered Nurse.
  • Three years of experience in an ambulatory / outpatient care facility.
  • Three years of experience in a supervisory / management role.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • An inquisitive nature and sense of curiosity to understand details while still seeing the big picture.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively.
  • Experience working with, and appreciation and respect for the value of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing collaborative professional relationships that enable the organization to accomplish goals

  • Salary Range

    $105,930 per year

    Retirement Plan Eligibility :

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
