West Hartford seeks to fill the position of Girls Basketball Coach at Sedgwick Middle School. Qualifications : Valid Connecticut coaching certification or temporary emergency coaching permit. Updated first aid / CPR training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education. Has knowledge and background in basketball as well as experience coaching the middle school athlete. Report to : Sedgwick Administration Primary Function : To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program. To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem. Major Duties and Responsibilities : Foster a positive and inclusive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and mutual respect among all players. Motivate and inspire middle school student-athletes to reach their full potential by focusing on skill development, effort, and personal growth. Design and implement practices that build fundamental basketball skills, game awareness, and a love for the sport. Serve as a mentor and role model, reinforcing the importance of being a student first by upholding high academic and behavioral expectations. Collaborate with teachers, families, and administrators to ensure players meet school academic and conduct standards required for participation. Lay the groundwork for success at the high school level and beyond by teaching responsibility, perseverance, and leadership on and off the court. Is accountable for issuing, collection, and storage of all equipment. Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events and practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Ensure the safety of and provide supervision of athletes in all athletic work areas. Is responsible for the actions and conduct of the athletes whenever they are under his / her jurisdiction. Is responsible for the general health and welfare of students in his / her sport and gives appropriate attention to athletes who are injured, ill or otherwise incapacitated. Contributes to a school culture of healthy competition and community pride. Demonstrate professionalism, organization, and effective communication with players, parents, and the school community.
