General Summary
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Conduct training which is conducive to learning based on recipient's level of understanding. Provide department procedure training of all new associates. Provide cross training in accordance with the Cross Training Policy and Procedure. Provide systems training and monitoring of all new associates to include the following :
o Abstract pertinent data into 3M
o To utilize 3M encoder and analyzer for APR-DRG
i. o Remote workstation training
Provide ongoing education for all coders and CDI regarding :
o Coding issues identified in the quality auditing process
o Coding issues identified in the external auditing process,
o Coding updates
o Coding clarifications and new procedures and unusual diagnoses that require new codes.
2. Facilitate success of new hire orientation and training. Monitor the progress of training and education for existing coders and CDI staff. Monitor regulatory changes to update coding and CDI staff.
3. Communicates with Coding and CDI Managers to update on new hire job readiness.
Communicate with coders on identified areas of improvement for successful coding compliance.
Prepare reports and monitoring documents that identify areas for improvement, effectively communicate findings, and provide recommendations to management and appropriate staff.
4. Schedule training sessions in coordination with Manager of Training Education.
Train internal and external staff on coding regulations and UMMS health system guidelines. Provide cross-training as scheduled by Manager of Training Education.
a. Completes the vendor application process to obtain AHIMA and AAPC CEUs when UMMS education qualifies according to AHIMA and / or AAPC minimum standards of approval.
5. Complies with AHIMA standards of ethical coding, querying, and coding compliance guidelines. Demonstrates support and compliance with University of Maryland Medical System mission, vision, values statement, goals and objectives and policies. Attends seminars and in-services as required to remain current on coding issues.
