Supervisor, Sterile Processing Department

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Inpatient and Perioperative Nursing, the SPD Supervisor coordinates and manages the day-to-day operations of the department and provides staff support, training, and supervision regarding the reprocessing of surgical instrumentation in compliance with regulatory authorities and facility standards, practices, policies and procedures.

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, staff and directs the administrative and technical work of the Sterile Processing Department; develops workload and productivity standards; ensures that departmental work is performed in a manner that appropriately serves clients and maintains positive guest relations.
  • Develops, interprets, and implements departmental goals, policies and procedures to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental facilities, services and personnel; oversees the preparation and maintenance of department policy and procedure manuals.
  • Develops, oversees and supervises departmental infection control, quality control and quality improvement programs and staff; ensures their compliance with State, The Joint Commission (TJC), the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and other regulations.
  • Monitors work in progress as well as completed work to ensure process and service quality; develop and authorize action plans when needed for improvement; respond to complaints and seek appropriate remedies.
  • Confers with other managers, directors, and cohorts regarding departmental activities; responds to and resolves service issues; identifies opportunities for service expansion and / or improvement. Assists with meeting equipment and supply needs for other facility departments; researches and locates special products needed for unusual situations; communicates and coordinates with outside vendors and others to analyze the cost / benefit of purchasing or borrowing products or equipment; helps surgical and other staff evaluate new procedures; trains staff on product use as necessary; establishes and maintains procedures for stock rotation and inventory control within the SPD.
  • Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget; monitors, evaluates and authorizes expenditures; assists in the procurement of surgical equipment, tools, implements, supplies and services; monitors department expenditures; plans and estimates future department costs including capital expenditures; justifies requests for equipment and personnel.
  • Ensures appropriate departmental staffing; selects, assigns, trains, directs and evaluates SPD staff; takes appropriate action on disciplinary matters; verifies and monitors staff proficiency; identifies staff development needs and oversees departmental meetings and staff training and education activities.
  • Collaborates with perioperative educator to develop and maintain competencies for staff as well as new hire training programs and student experiences.
  • Ensure that training, documentation and competencies meet the requirements for accreditation agencies.
  • Manages the replenishment, distribution and maintenance of sterile processing equipment and supplies; ensures proper equipment function as well as timely and preventative maintenance of equipment; establishes maintenance and replacement schedules; monitors and assures the proper use of chemicals and personal safety equipment; may recommend facility improvements or assist with planning new facility construction.
  • Maintains adequate supply of products and collaborates with Materials Management on recalls, outdates, back orders, and substitutes for surgical supplies and implants.
  • Ensures effective and appropriate utilization of electronic information systems and other administrative tools used to support department operations; collects and maintains accurate data; oversees the preparation and maintenance of records and reports; ensures that the communication of confidential patient information is done appropriately.
  • Represents the SPD at meetings and conferences; participates in committees as assigned.
  • Functions as a working supervisor to assist with the day-to-day needs of the department, help cover staffing shortages, provide relief breaks to staff, and cover call, as needed.
  • Reviews the surgical schedule and daily staffing assignments to ensure resources are available for efficient surgical procedure turnover and case volumes.
  • Schedule and timecards are completed and posted within expected time frames.
  • Refers all decisions beyond scope of responsibilities to the AVP, or their designee.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Standards

  • Completes and maintains required certifications and mandatory training within the defined time frame.
  • Adheres to philosophy and objectives, standards of care and the policies and procedures of the Medical Center.
  • Demonstrates expert level knowledge of sterile processing procedures.
  • Compliant with patient confidentiality standards.
  • Promotes a healthy work environment and demonstrates the ability to remain calm, professional, and productive in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • Communicates effectively with subordinates, patients, and medical center personnel.
  • Ability to lift, stand, walk, and crouch for long periods of time using proper body mechanics.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in biological science, nursing, or related field, and / or certification in a surgical technologist or central sterile processing technologist program from an approved educational program.
  • 1-2 years' experience supervising sterile processing, operating room or surgical nursing or technical staff, preferably in an acute care hospital or ambulatory setting.
  • Knowledge of sterile processing procedures and surgical instrumentation terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years' experience supervising sterile processing, operating room or surgical nursing or technical staff, preferably in an acute care hospital or ambulatory setting.
  • Experience in onboarding, continuing education and competency development for new and experienced staff.
  • Experience in materials management and supply requisition processes.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or healthcare related field.
