Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a 100-bed freestanding psychiatric hospital located near the beautiful resort area of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a short 10-minute drive to the ocean front. VBPC offers acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults 18 years and older. The hospital is accessible 24 hours a day for admissions, and includes mental health assessments and an excellent referral network. Treatment programs and specialty services at VBPC include substance abuse, dual diagnosis and partial hospitalization. Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center currently has an opening for a full time Health Information Management Coder .

POSITION SUMMARY

The Health Information (Coder) participates as an integral member of the records management team by ensuring the quality maintenance of patient information / medical records, within all laws, rules and regulations of federal and state licensing agencies, and TJC standards for the quality of patient care. The Health Information Coder has the primary responsibility of assigning accurate ICD-10-CM codes upon patient discharge (inpatient and outpatient). Use of 3M-encoder is preferred. Communicates with physicians for any related coding questions. This position will also have Health Information Analyst responsibility for carrying out activities of the Health Information Management Department in the maintenance of all patient medical records. The HIM specialist provides technical support and assistance in abstracting, chart assembly and analysis, processing releases of information, sorting and filing. Assists staff with record completion.

Minimum Requirements :

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree – Health Information Technology or equivalent in work experience. Required
  • RHIT, RHIA or CCS preferred and / or other coder specialist certifications.
  • At least one (1) to 5 years’ inpatient / outpatient coding and healthcare management / medical records experience preferred. At least 1 year of behavioral health hospital experience preferred.
