Children’s Health Andrews Institute (CHAI), Plano, TX, is recruiting a student interested in receiving a PhD in Kinesiology from Concordia University, St. Paul with a research assistantship available through CHAI’s Sports Science and Research Laboratory (SSRL).

CHAI is a comprehensive orthopaedic and sports medicine facility consisting of surgical and primary care musculoskeletal care, concussion, mental health, rehabilitation, sports science, performance, and research. As a fully integrated medical center our services provide a continuum of care from initial evaluation to return to performance. The SSRL contributes to the overall mission of Children’s Health- “Make Life Better for Children through three pillars of effort- research (ACL, concussion, female youth athlete, patellar instability), sports science (youth to professional athletes), and return to performance (ACL).

The PhD in Kinesiology is designed for students to develop specialized expertise and leadership skills, preparing graduates for a variety of impactful careers in the field of human movement. Students may select a concentration in Exercise Science, Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, or Strength and Conditioning.

The PhD student will contribute to the ongoing ACL research agenda while developing a dissertation topic that is consistent with the research of the SSRL. The PhD student will be exposed to all facets of research including project development, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results, and dissemination of results.

Specific Responsibilities

Provide research support to projects including focus on secondary ACL injury risk in female athletes

  • Subject recruitment of ACLR patients returning to sport
  • Data collection including kinematics, strength, functional performance, cognitive function
  • Reinforce collection, methods, and consistency (i.e., validity and reliability) across research projects
  • Collaborate with sports rehabilitation, sports performance, and sports science to develop clinically-relevant strategies based on study findings
  • Data processing / statistical analysis
  • Abstract / manuscript writing

How You’ll Be Successful :

Student Qualifications

Successful candidates should have :

  • Completed MS related to physical therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, sports science, and / or strength and conditioning
  • Located within or willing to relocate to the Dallas, TX area.
  • Prior research / testing / training experience on ACL-reconstructed patients.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Excel, SPSS, R, Power BI, SQL, MATLAB and / or other statistical software
  • Competency in the use of motion analysis equipment
  • To qualify for a graduate research assistantship to conduct research within the SSRL potential students successfully complete the following :

  • Accepted into the PhD program at Concordia University, St. Paul
  • Interview with CHAI and SSRL personnel for recommendation of assistantship
  • Submit job application to Children’s Health and pass associated screenings
  • A research assistantship within the SSRL will be awarded to a qualifying student and includes a stipend and tuition waiver in exchange for 20 hours / week of research effort towards ongoing projects. Assistantships are one-year appointments that will be renewed annually, for up to three years, contingent upon successful academic and research progress.
