Job Summary
The Security Systems Electronics Technician installs, maintains, repairs, modifies, and replaces, at the component level, district security systems, safetyequipment, two-way radios, computers, police car and dispatch office electronic equipment, and school intercom systems, including preventive maintenance on this equipment.
Essential Functions
- Plans and implements the installation, maintenance, modification, replacement and repair, on the component level, of district electronic equipment; e.g. security systems, fire systems, police car and dispatch office electronic equipment, intercoms, computers, two-way radios.
- Performs preventive maintenance on assigned district electronic equipment.
- Diagnoses problems with electronic equipment using schematics, blueprints, and a variety of electronic testing equipment.
- Designs and assembles electronic equipment such as security systems, fire alarm systems, and radio / life safety systems.
- Designs and assembles custom circuitry for security systems, police dispatch and car equipment, boiler alarms, and fire systems.
- Keeps accurate records of time and materials used on each work order.
- Ensures vehicles and tools assigned are well kept and maintained.
- Maintains the organization, cleanliness, and safety of assigned work area.
- Assigns work to hourly employee crews and assistant technicians and monitors their work .
- Engages in ongoing professional learning to ensure knowledge of new developments in the field.
- Maintains confidences when working on sensitive police matters.

Strong general knowledge of practical theory of electronic technology.Knowledge of basic electrical theory.Strong general knowledge of a variety of electronics related test equipment; e.g. multimeters, signal tracing devices, power supplies, frequency counters, and oscilloscopes.Knowledge of vehicle wiring is required with special awareness of vehicle safety codes and warranties.Skill in performing mechanical tasks and using all relevant hand tools.Basic computer skills.Ability to learn and understand a variety of related computer hardware and software.Skill in diagnosing problems and utilizing problem-solving skills to address identified issues.Basic math skills.Basic oral and written communication skills.Ability to work as part of a team and maintain a positive and helpful attitude.Skill in reading and drawing schematics utilizing electronic industry symbols and codes.Strong knowledge of safety issues and equipment limitations.Proficient in soldering for the removal of surface mount components.Knowledge of metal fabrication, including design, cut, weld, and bend metal stock, is preferred.Basic knowledge of boiler systems and energy management is preferred.Required Education and Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalentTwo years of relevant formal training in electronics, electronics theory, and repair.Requires a valid driver’s license.Requires completion of training in working around, handling, and treatment of asbestos provided by Granite School District.Required Prior Experience
Requires a minimum of four (4) years of successful experience in a related area.Note : The district reserves the right to make specific requirements for this position, however, when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly pertinent, some exchanges between training and experience may be authorized.
Assigned Decision Making
Plans for preventive maintenance of all police and other electronic systems such as security, fire, two-way radio / life safety and police systems.Sets specifications pertaining to supply purchases and parts procurement.Makes repair vs. replacement decisions.Prioritizes and schedules own work.Condemns equipment and recommends replacement.Consults with school and district administrators to determine best course to follow in use and installation of electronic equipment.Interactions with Others
Interacts with maintenance employees, custodians, inspectors, contractors, district and school administration, vendors, and the public.Supervisory Responsibility
Trains, assigns work to, and monitors assistants, hourly employees and other technicians on a regular basis.In the absence of the Shop Foreman, maintains the continuity of work in the department.Working Environment
Work takes place in environments of cold, heat, dust, dirt, noise, moisture, chemical exposure, high voltage, varied heights, and confined spaces.Special equipment and suits are required where working around hazardous materials such as asbestos.Emergencies may require irregular hours.Physical Demands :
