Position Purpose
The Paraprofessional is responsible for assisting the classroom Teacher with students with special needs in areas of academics, social skills, independence skills and other activities of daily living.
Requirements, Licenses and Certification
HS DiplomaMinimum – 48 completed college unitsEarly Childhood Education units and / or a Bachelor's Degree a PLUSMust pass an in-house competency exam or currently possess a valid CBESTIn the event needed to transport students, must possess a valid CA Driver License and furnish proof ofvalid auto insurance

Under the direction of the Classroom Teacher or Program Specialist, the Paraprofessional to Students with Special Needs shall assist in fulfilling the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) as set up by the IEP Team. The Paraprofessional shall help prepare the classroom, monitor and provide documentation of the student’s daily performance, assist with student’s personal hygiene, and assist Classroom Teacher with various school events. In compliance with HBIC policies and procedures, the Paraprofessional shall (this is NOT intended to be a full-and- complete list of duties) :
Assist students with special needs in all self-help activities and activities of daily livingAssist students in appropriate transitional skillsMeeting and greeting students arriving on buses at transportation areasAssist students with mobility issues in navigating their indoor and outdoor educational environmentAssist with toileting and toilet training (as needed); this can include changing soiled clothingInstruct in areas of HygieneAssist with cooking activitiesAssist with eating and nutritional needs throughout the day; this includes assisted feeding (as needed)Maintain clean work areasMaintain proper function and treatment of equipment and supplies as directedAssist in preparing instructional materialsLifting and securing students safely using a two person lift as necessaryModifying activities appropriately for students with special needsChecking and following each student's individual and class schedulesMaintaining informational charts on student behavior and academic progressRecord regular, on-going academic and / or behavioral dataRemove students during behavioral disturbances (as needed / directed)Communicating with the school officeAssist with the distribution of parent-teacher communications, as directedAssist student in completing IEP based goal workPrepare / gather goal work as needed such as worksheets and other materialsTurn in completed documentation forms to their designated areasAssist with Behavioral Interventions as needed or instructedAttends to the basic needs of the students, such as feeding, cleaning, toileting and diapering to meet therequirements of the IEP.
Provides clear behavior expectations for students and monitors student behaviors throughout the classand school campus.
Follows established policies and procedures for reporting incidents (e.g. behavior emergencies, studentinjuries, child abuse, substance abuse, harassment and violence).
