POSITION SUMMARY : The Disability, Mental Health Assistant will work directly with students with significant developmental delays as well as social / emotional deficits under supervision and in conjunction with UCC's Disabilities and Mental Health Manager. The Disability, Mental Health Assistant will address specific goals as outlined in the student's IEP, Action Plan, or Positive Behavior Support Plan and provide individualized attention required for students in and out of the classroom setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be a resource person for students, parents, and staff
- Communicate regularly with Disability, Mental Health Manager, special education teachers, regular education teachers, positive behavior intervention specialists, and parents regarding students' needs and progress
- Assist special education teacher(s) to provide for the instructional and behavioral needs of students with disabilities.
- Participate in meetings to develop and update IEPs, Evaluation Reports, and behavior plans, as requested
- Assist students with positive behavior support plans and interventions to develop social / emotional competencies.
- Engage positively with the children and use appropriate discipline methods as outlined in DCF 251, United Community Center's Guidance Policies / Procedures, and Pyramid Model practices.
- Implement classroom activities that are child-centered, developmentally appropriate, open-ended, and process-oriented under the direction of the classroom team.
- Understanding of Head Start performance standards, Wisconsin Common Core standards, andWisconsin Early Learning standards.
- Comply with all Health and Safety policies including ensuring no child is left alone or unsupervised by staff, consultants, contractors, or volunteers while under my care
- Other Duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrates Basic computer knowledge, Basic knowledge of Excel, word, and Google Drive.Handle sensitive information in a confidential mannerUnderstand assessment data to support theimplementation of learning experiences and how to meet children's individual needs.Support the implementation of a zoning plan for the classroom and outside learning environment. Ensure active supervision and child-tracking procedures are implemented throughout the daily routine.Monitor theprogress of interventions. Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in psychology, or a related field from an accredited College or University. Certification by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction will be expected. Previous experience implementing curriculum and working with children is preferred. Must maintain high professional and ethical standards, especially when dealing with confidential or sensitive information. Must have strong listening, writing, and oral communication skills. Being conversational or fluent in Spanish is seen as an advantage.
Working Conditions :
This position is in an office environment where the noise level can be low to moderate. May have to work longer hours due to meeting with parents and students before and after school. Must be able to sit for long periods, stand, and walk up and down stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to help perform essential functions.
