W&A Engineering is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to join our fast-paced Land Surveying team. Our ideal candidate will have experience in all types of land surveying, including ALTA surveys, boundary retracement surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking. Experience with conventional surveying, robotic total stations, and RTK GPS equipment is required. Experience and familiarity with Carlson SurvCE software is beneficial. Candidates must be able to effectively train and guide other employees in tasks required for survey fieldwork, including equipment use, compass readings, and boundary evidence, proper instrument setup (includes builders level), understanding of errors in measurement, plat and worksheet comprehension, data collector use (including file transfer); stake driving (hub and tack, offsets, benchmarks), cutting traverse line, and safety awareness.

Experience :

5+ years Crew Chief experience preferred, 2+ required

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Lead a team of Survey Instrument Technicians to complete an assigned survey on time, to specifications, and with accuracy and efficiency
  • Train Survey Instrument Technicians on survey techniques, equipment usage, problem-solving, and safety procedures
  • Research historical data of site and plan services according to a timeline, in conjunction with Survey Project Manager
  • Perform land surveys, including ALTA surveys, boundary retracement surveys, topographic survey, and construction staking
  • Collect field data by using assigned survey field equipment, such as a data collector, base and rover, and / or total station
  • Troubleshoot issues with survey field equipment and escalate major concerns when necessary
  • Operate a company vehicle and update Fleet Manager on maintenance needs
  • Manage and maintain supplies and inventory in company vehicle brought on site
  • Review field data before sending to Survey Project Manager; collaborate and provide additional information during field data analysis process if necessary
  • Collaborate with internal departments on survey completion
  • Communicate with clients and superintendents on site regarding survey details and services provided
  • Coordinate the crew’s time entries for billing purposes

  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Teams, Excel, and Outlook
  • Requirements :

    A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required. Must be able to interpret directions from management, understand survey requirements per contracts and site development plans, and must be able to work independently and / or supervise personnel. Must meet physical requirements needed to complete large scale boundaries, topographic route surveys, engineering design topographic surveys, and construction layout. Ideal candidates will also possess the ability to maintain a working dialogue with existing clients to maintain relationships and obtain future work from those clients and their contacts.
