Financial Services Specialist
The Financial Services Specialist is responsible for managing general ledger functions, monthly reconciliations, and accurate financial recordkeeping for JYF, Inc. This role prepares board financial statements, grant reports, and audit documentation, while ensuring compliance with accounting policies, Comptroller directives, and agency procedures. Duties include processing accounts payable, auditing transactions for proper approvals, managing vendor records and 1099 reporting, and supporting bank deposit functions. The position also oversees fixed asset accounting, monthly reconciliations, and annual physical inventories to ensure compliance with CAPP guidelines. In addition, the specialist assists with budget monitoring, investment account analysis, and year-end audit adjustments, while serving as a collaborative team member through cross-training and support of departmental procedures. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, discretion with sensitive information, effective communication, and a commitment to professional ethics, accuracy, and timeliness in all financial operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Thorough working knowledge of advanced accounting practices and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including both GASB and FASB standards, with emphasis on governmental accounting and not-for-profit fund accounting. Strong proficiency in fixed asset accounting, including capitalization rules, depreciation methodologies, asset lifecycle tracking, and compliance with Virginia CAPP Manual is strongly preferred. Advanced Excel capability, including pivot tables, data validation, lookups and formula-based reconciliation used to support fixed asset, controllable asset and supply-inventory reporting. Experience developing, designing and generating detailed and summary financial and / or fixed asset reports across multiple software platforms, including Excel, Word, and MIP and Cardinal Financial or similar accounting systems. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and manage workload independently while balancing recurring deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document procedures and communicate with staff at all levels of the organization. Ability to analyze complex data sets and identify anomalies, trends, or risks related to assets, inventories, and internal control compliance, providing meaningful recommendations for improvement. Demonstrated creativity, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, contributing to process improvements, system enhancements and efficient asset-tracking workflows. Ability to work cooperatively with staff at all levels, serving as a knowledgeable resource for asset policies, inventory procedures and compliance with accounting standards.
Additional Considerations
BS / BA degree in accounting or equivalent experience preferred. Considerable experience in fiscal administration. Significant experience in fiscal administration and accounting / bookkeeping required. Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia accounting procedures is strongly preferred. Experience with accounting and financial software systems is also preferred.
