Responsibilities of an inspector in ensuring the work is conducted safely, to specified standards, and in compliance with regulations.

Here's a breakdown of typical tasks and responsibilities included :

  • Pre-Construction Review and Site Setup :
  • Review project documentation : Examine work permits, blueprints, design specifications, safety plans, and other relevant documents related to the sewer repair.
  • Verify contractor qualifications and licenses : Ensure the contractor and their personnel have the necessary licenses and certifications for sewer repair and excavation work.
  • Check site safety measures : Verify implementation of traffic control plans (if applicable), proper signage, excavation shoring, and overall site security.
  • Confirm utility locates : Ensure all underground utilities have been properly identified and marked before excavation begins.
  • Evaluate property layout : Understand the location of the sewer line on the property and any potential obstacles like trees or structures.
  • Inspection of Excavation and Pipe Installation :
  • Inspect excavation : Verify trenches are dug to the correct dimensions, depth, and slope, and that shoring, or trench boxes are used correctly to prevent cave-ins.
  • Check pipe materials : Ensure the correct type and size of sewer pipe (e.g., PVC, RCP) is being used as specified in the plans.
  • Inspect pipe installation : Verify pipe joints are properly aligned and sealed (e.g., using correct gaskets and lubricants), and that the pipe is laid with the correct grade for proper flow.
  • Document findings : Record observations, take photos of critical installation steps, and note any deviations from the plans.
  • Inspection of Repair Work (Traditional & Trenchless) :
  • Traditional Repair : Inspect damaged sections of pipe before removal. Verify the removed pipe section matches the identified problem. Inspect the installation of new pipe sections and couplings. Trenchless Repair (Pipe Lining or Pipe Bursting) : Inspect the cleaning and preparation of the existing sewer line. Verify the correct insertion and inflation / bursting process of the new lining / pipe. Inspect the curing of the lining or successful installation of the new pipe.
  • Spot Repair : Inspect localized repair areas for proper technique and materials. Manhole Inspection : Inspect new or repaired manholes for proper size, depth, and sealing, ensuring secure lids and vent installation if required.
  • Post-Construction Testing and Backfilling :
  • Witness pipe testing : Observe hydrostatic pressure testing to check for leaks and ensure system integrity.
  • Inspect backfilling : Verify the correct backfill material (e.g., sand) is used, properly compacted in lifts to prevent settlement, and that warning tape is installed above the pipe.
  • Final surface restoration : Check that the excavation area is restored according to project specifications (e.g., repaving roads, landscaping).
  • Reporting and Documentation :
  • Maintain detailed inspection records : Document all inspections, including dates, times, work performed, findings, and corrective actions taken.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive reports : Report on the progress of the work, any issues encountered, and ensure the project complies with applicable codes and standards.
  • Update public sewer maps : If applicable, update maps to show new sewer installations or significant repairs.
  • Safety Monitoring and Compliance :
  • Monitor site safety practices : Ensure workers are wearing appropriate PPE and adhering to safety protocols for confined spaces, excavation, and equipment use.
  • Address safety concerns : Stop work if unsafe conditions are observed and ensure corrective measures are implemented.
