Job Title
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of a variety of equipment and heavy equipment, including Graders, Gradalls, backhoes, Front-end loaders, rollers, water trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, in the Public Works Department. May work alone or with a crew to accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Functions
Operates a variety of heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
Performs scheduled maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm water drainage systems, and retention basins; hauls, transports, loads and / or unloads various material and equipment associated with assigned projects.
Assists with preparation of concrete base including setting wood forms and positioning steel; measure and pour concrete; finish concrete; remove wooden forms and backfill; clean site.
Drives to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.
Maintains dirt roads, shoulders, constructing and maintaining temporary parking lots.
Performs asphalt repair and replacement; excavates, sweeps, dumps, rakes, spreads, and rolls / compacts asphalt.
Performs all forms of concrete form setting, concrete placement and concrete finishing related to street maintenance.
Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections of equipment, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment.
Identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
Performs load inspections to prevent hazardous waste spills or dangerous road conditions.
Performs general maintenance, welding, fabrication, and repair on City equipment as needed.
Completes required daily logs and reports.
Hauls materials, transports vehicles, and equipment to job sites to using various trucks.
Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
Performs skilled construction, maintenance, and labor work; resurfaces and grades and shapes roads; aids in emergency and storm related activities.
Performs a variety of Public Works Department manual labor tasks as assigned.
Assists in providing training and direction to new employees as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned
Subject to after-hours call-out for emergency situations.
Has frequent contact with employees, citizens, local state, federal agencies, and other city departments.
Ability to arrive to work on time and must maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education, Experience, Certificates, and Licenses Required
High school graduate or equivalent and three (3) years' experience in the operation of heavy equipment; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
A Valid Class B CDL Texas motor vehicle driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
A Valid Texas Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is Preferred.
