  • Job Summary

    This position involves teaching American Sign Language, Interpreting, and related courses for the Deaf Studies and Interpreting programs, including developing syllabi, instructional materials, activities, and assessments as assigned by the Program Director. The successful candidate will teach a minimum of 15 credits each in the fall and spring semesters, combining lecture and skills courses, while fulfilling service obligations to the college. Additional responsibilities may include supervising and supporting adjunct faculty, advising students, coordinating program activities, tracking data, assisting with scheduling, fostering community and institutional partnerships, seeking grant funding, and participating in the Program Advisory Committee. Onsite, in-person instruction is required.

    The successful candidate will begin in Fall 2026.

    Essential Functions

  • Supervises and instructs students in classroom and / or lab settings; delivers instruction using collaborative, communicative, active learning, and innovative methods, including instructional technology, to support a range of learning styles and abilities.
  • Develops syllabi / course outline, course materials and assessment tools.
  • Evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records; prepares and grades exams, papers, and assignments.
  • Available to meet with students for one hour per day during designated office hours; works with students outside of class; keeps department and college hours of accountability.
  • Uses computers for communication and research; meets deadlines; participates in committee, department, college and district meetings, projects, and activities.
  • Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual training skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field and to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars and / or workshops.
  • To perform the duties of this position successfully, the candidate must be proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, SIS, HCM, and GoReact.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught

    OR

    Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor's degree or higher

    OR

    A Master's degree or higher in the teaching field

    OR

    A Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credits in the teaching field

    OR

    A Master's degree or higher in any field with a combination of 24 upper division and / or graduate credits in the teaching field

    OR

    A Journeyman certification in the field to be taught, such as American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) "certified" or "master" certification.

    Desired Qualifications

  • One (1) or more valid certifications from the following organizations : Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI), American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA).
  • Master's degree or higher in American Sign language education or ASL / English interpreting or related field.
  • Three (3) years or more of experience teaching American Sign Language at the post-secondary level using different modalities.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in program management, curriculum development, outreach, and recruitment in areas of ASL and / or interpreting preferred.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high level professional and academic conversation in ASL required.
  • Experience with educational technology / softwares such as Canvas, GoReact and more.
  • Strong knowledge of American Sign Language linguistics, Deaf Culture, and the dynamics within the Deaf community; as well as the theories and philosophy of interpreting.
  • Special Working Conditions

  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa.
  • May be required to teach evening, weekend and / or online classes.
  • May be required to lift objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional local travel required, possession of valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required, must meet minimum standards regarding driving.
  • Maybe required to sit for a prolonged period of time; viewing a computer monitor.
  • Full time faculty are on campus two or more days per week.
