Vacation & Sick Leave

At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).

Holidays

The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year : New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Retirement

This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12%, per fiscal year.

General Purpose

Under general supervision, performs routine semiskilled and skilled general labor, maintenance, construction, repair, and upkeep of City facilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Performs a variety of routine and non-routine repairs and maintenance including but not limited to carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and general work.

Identifies and reports facility maintenance problems requiring additional repair in a proactive fashion.

Watering, mowing, weed removal, tree and shrub trimming, general landscape maintenance, and turf maintenance as needed.

Safe application of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.

Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and manual labor work.

Assists in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City facilities and grounds.

Picks up and delivers materials as directed.

Operates mowers, tractors, trenchers, rototillers, vehicles, and equipment safely.

Utilizes and maintains safe use of hand and power tools according to best practices and manufacturer recommendations.

Completes daily reports and logs either in facilities software or paper copies as required.

Assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies.

Oversees the activities of temporary labor and contractors as required.

May assist in training new employees.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years' experience in the repair and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and grounds; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of :

City policies and procedures.

Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.

Principles and practices of building and facilities maintenance.

Tools and equipment maintenance and repair methods and materials.

Safety standards and practices.

Traffic laws and rules for safe vehicle and equipment operation.

Principles of record keeping and records management.

Skill in :

Safe and efficient operation of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.

Reading and interpreting maps, technical specifications, and operations manuals for vehicles, buildings, and equipment.

Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.

Ability to :

Explain technical needs and concepts to peers, supervisors, and contractors in both conversation and writing.

Work on weekends and evenings for on-call rotation and / or planned outages and emergency situations.

Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work.

12-Month Goals :

Become familiar with the facilities throughout the City. Become acquainted with locations of key Facilities related features including electrical panels, roof access, main water shut off valves, fire alarm panels, key equipment, etc.

Complete 10 hours of basic electrical, HVAC, custodial, and / or plumbing training.

Help to maintain APWA accreditation for the Public Works Department.

Special Requirements :

Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License. Arizona Commercial Driver's License Class B preferred. Possession of a Pesticide Spray Certificate or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire required. Specific technical training and certifications may be required.

Physical Demands / Work Environment :

Work is performed outdoors in extreme heat or cold and in public facilities. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and utilize ladders to access roofs. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
