Job Summary
The Grades 3–8 English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) will enhance instructional quality and student literacy outcomes by supporting teachers in delivering high-quality, standards-aligned first instruction. Grounded in evidence-based practices and aligned with the Science of Reading, this role centers on building educator capacity through coaching, modeling, and professional development across intermediate elementary and middle school settings. The ELA TOSA will play a vital role in advancing instructional consistency, equitable practices, and the effective implementation of core and supplemental programs such as Read 180 and other NUSD-adopted resources.
Applicants should have a minimum of 3 years experience in teaching, possess a valid Multiple-Subject Credential with English Authorization, or an English Single-Subject Credential, and have demonstrated site and / or district leadership, experience as a presenter, familiarity with District-utilized curriculum and software (as well as an interest in learning about new resources), ability to work well and to collaborate with others, show initiative, flexibility, problem-solving, and organizational skills, and a desire to assist classroom teachers to implement targeted evidence based instruction. This position requires lead learners who are data-driven and comfortable moving our Board-approved theory into action in an ongoing cycle of continuous learning and inquiry. Experience with Culturally Relevant Teaching, working in highly functional PLC environments as well as proficiency in technological presentation skills is highly desired.
Qualifications & Skills :
- Valid California teaching credential with English authorization required; Reading Specialist credential or related certification preferred.
- Deep knowledge of ELA content standards (Grades 3–8), Science of Reading research, and instructional practices that develop strong readers and writers.
- Demonstrated success supporting literacy instruction across diverse classrooms, including use of scaffolding, universal design for learning, and differentiation strategies.
- Experience with core and supplemental ELA materials such as Read 180, i-Ready, StudySync, and Benchmark Advance / Adelante.
- Proven ability to facilitate coaching cycles, lead professional learning, and support teachers in using data to drive instructional decisions.
- Commitment to educational equity and closing achievement and opportunity gaps for English Learners, students with disabilities, and historically marginalized student groups.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, guide, and build capacity among educators.
- Ability to foster trust and shared ownership of student success across diverse school teams and instructional settings. Required Documents :
