RANGE : $170,000 to $190,000
Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for a Dean of Students to join our team. The Law School’s size, vibrant employee and student population, and commitment to training the next generation of lawyers and promoting social justice, will offer a candidate the opportunity to develop and diversify practical skills and participate firsthand in operating a successful educational institution.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Student Affairs Officer, the Dean of Students will play a vital role in fostering an inclusive, supportive, and academically rigorous environment that encourages student success and well-being. The ideal candidate will have experience in law school or higher education student affairs, be passionate about supporting law students, developing and implementing sensible and rigorous academic policies, have substantial experience or familiarity with the legal profession, and fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
Responsibilities include :
- Developing and implementing a student engagement and support strategy to create and facilitate an environment in which students can thrive and succeed while in law school, preparing for post-graduate success.
- Leading institutional response to student crises.
- Managing the Student Affairs department, guiding a team of professionals in overseeing a wide array of matters involving student organizations, diversity and inclusion, academic progress and policies, wellness, and housing.
- Maintaining an annual budget and providing a supportive environment for students from the moment of their acceptance to law school through their graduation and study for the bar examination.
- Collaborating with Law School faculty as well as numerous departments, including Academic Success, Operations, Career Services, Alumni Affairs, Campus Safety and Equal Opportunity and Title IX.
- Supervising the Director of Residence Life, whose responsibility is to oversee student housing and residential life to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for both academic and social development.
- Supervising the Director of Student Life, whose responsibility is to create and oversee student programming, including clubs, activities, and student leadership opportunities, and budgets pertaining to those programs.
- Supervising the Director of Accessibility, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX Coordinator, whose responsibility it is to oversee accommodations, equal opportunity education, training, assessment, and investigations, and Title IX compliance, education, training, assessment, and investigations.
- In consultation with the Registrar’s Office and the Academic Success team, assisting students in academic planning and the provision of academic support and counseling throughout exam periods, after students receive grades, and as needed throughout the year.
- Managing student conduct matters, providing guidance and expertise on student rights and responsibilities, the student disciplinary process, and alternative dispute resolution. Implementing the school’s attendance policy and facilitating decision-making regarding withdrawals and leaves of absence, as needed.
- Providing strategic advice to senior leadership regarding student needs and perspectives.
- Additional responsibilities, such as assisting with Orientation, Exam Period, Commencement, and all major school activities.
- Providing advice, support, and communication as needed to students in the wake of personal tragedies and major events and emergencies.
- Communicating with the student body on a regular basis and in response to unexpected situations.
- Providing support as needed to student-facing faculty committees, such as those pertaining to disability, diversity, academic standards and others.
Required :
At least ten years’ experience working in student affairs in a higher education setting, ideally as a Dean or Associate Dean of Students. Law school experience is strongly preferred.Bachelor of Arts or Science and an advanced degree in law, education, counseling or related field. Law degree preferred.Demonstrated ability to relate to and support students from diverse backgrounds, including racial, socio-economic, religious, and LGBTQ+ diversity.Exceptional communication skills, particularly with student organizations and the student body as a whole.Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage and motivate a team of direct reports and to oversee budgets.Experience in developing and providing programming for students in matters pertaining to academic, personal, and professional success and personal well-being.Familiarity with legal education, including the ability to guide students in understanding the expectations and norms of the legal profession.Work environment :
The role requires regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and other administrative departments. Fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere.The work will primarily be conducted in an office setting with occasional responsibilities in other areas of the campus, such as student residences, event spaces, and meeting rooms.Remote capabilities :
The Dean of Students position is primarily on campus due to the hands-on nature of the role.Some remote work capabilities will be available.Physical demands :
