We’re seeking two experienced Building Permit Technicians to join a large municipal office in Altadena, CA (91001). These roles support building and safety operations by processing construction documents, permit applications, and ensuring compliance with local codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Provide courteous, accurate public assistance at the counter and over the phone to developers, architects, engineers, and property owners

Issue permits, review plan check applications, and ensure compliance with building codes and ordinances

Process and track maps, plans, invoices, deposits, and fee payments

Calculate and reconcile fees and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports

Direct inquiries to appropriate departments and assist with planning and development applications

Prepare maps, charts, legal documents, and presentation materials

Conduct field surveys and map land use data

Update and maintain automated permit tracking systems

May provide training or guidance to administrative staff

Qualifications

Education & Experience

High school diploma required

Minimum 2 years of experience as a Permit Technician or equivalent, including reviewing plans and processing applications using automated tracking systems

Experience in municipal engineering, building code administration, or hazardous materials programs preferred

Knowledge & Skills

Understanding of building codes, standards, and inspection procedures

Proficient in computerized permit tracking systems and Microsoft Office tools

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Strong attention to detail, organization, and recordkeeping

Ability to read and interpret plans and communicate professionally with the public

Licenses & Certifications

Valid California Class C driver’s license (may be required)

Code certification required

Physical & Work Environment

Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 25 lbs occasionally

Work performed primarily in an office, with occasional outdoor duties

May require evening or weekend meeting attendance

Compensation & Benefits

$30.00 – $35.00 per hour
