PURPOSE

The ASC Sterile Processing Technician works to maintain the cleanliness, functionality, and inventory of the instruments, equipment, and re-usable medical supplies according to nationally recognized standards, regulations, and center policies to ensure safe, quality patient care. Carries out all duties while maintaining compliance and confidentiality and promoting the mission and philosophy of the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, prepping, and sterilization of surgical instruments, re-usable supplies, and
  • Cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes equipment utilizing the decontamination / sterile processing (SPD) area.
  • Responsible for understanding the use and handling of chemicals used in the SPD
  • Follows the recommended instructions for decontaminating, cleaning, sonification, drying, flushing, sterilizing, items in the SPD area
  • Uses appropriate biological and chemical monitoring with documentation of
  • Rotates processed
  • Inspects required items.
  • Follows “Instructions For Use” (IFU) information from manufacturers’ related to all items that flow through the SPD area.
  • Monitors the surgical schedule to anticipate instrumentation, equipment, re-usable medical supply
  • Removes defective items from service and replaces missing items, and alerts other parties as
  • Maintains appropriate tray lists and inventory stock

  • Pursues additional knowledge and training to remain current on standards and regulations relating to the sterile processing
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, center / service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Follows the center exposure control plans for blood borne and airborne
  • Responsible for demonstrating respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous
  • Ensures medical facilities are as clean as possible and follows excellent hygiene to keep patients clean and safe from sickness and

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Required :

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three (3) or more months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and
  • Preferred :

  • One (1) or more years of ASC experience.
  • Certificate / License

  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician preferred.
  • Current AHA approved Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course completion card.
  • Required to maintain CPR certification during employment.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of all activities associated with the delivery of SP Tech practices and duties assigned to this role.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously in a fast –paced environment.
  • Ability to work within a stressful environment under consistent deadlines, pressures and interruptions.
  • Excellent verbal and written documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work variable hours and be flexible to meet the needs of the center’s daily surgery schedule.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, patients, physicians and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Excellent computer and keyboarding skills, including familiarity with Windows. Must be adept at using various applications including EMR, database, spreadsheet, report writing, project management, word processing, communicate by e-mail and use scheduling
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete
