Salary :                   $85,000 - $100,000

Position Summary :     Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Programming, this position is a member of the classical programming team of the LA Phil.  This position will have responsibility for programming the Hollywood Bowl classical series, and will serve as the primary contact for cover conductors, functioning as program manager for the LA Phil’s conductor fellowship program. The Programming Manager will also support classical programming presented by the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ford, and Beckmen YOLA Center, including galas, festivals, operatic and multidisciplinary productions, recitals, visiting orchestras, classical presentations, as well as education and community programs.

Essential Functions :

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Programming and Artistic Administrator, manage day-to-day activities of artistic planning.
  • Lead programming for Hollywood Bowl classical series, working alongside the Senior Director of Programming to ensure programming and audience goals are achieved.
  • Serve as the program manager for Conductor Fellowship Program and cover conductors : administer the day-to-day activities of all Fellows and cover conductors.
  • In collaboration with Learning department colleagues, serve as lead Artistic department member in planning and programming Symphonies for Youth series.
  • In collaboration with the Philanthropy department, serve as lead Artistic department member in planning and programming chamber and solo artists for private performances.
  • Support Senior Director of Programming and Artistic Administrator in programming duties, as assigned, for Walt Disney Concert Hall classical subscriptions series, including but not limited to LA Phil subscription, Colburn Celebrity, Visiting Orchestras, Organ, Chamber, Festivals, and other projects.
  • Communicate artistic department information, programming, and needs to relevant internal parties, working closely with Marketing, Media, Orchestra Management, Production, Library, Finance, and Philanthropy.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Social Media teams, advising and coordinating artist participation in campaigns and promotions as needed.
  • Review and update marketing, digital, and PR materials for accuracy.
  • In collaboration with Artistic Administrator, ensure Programming Department awareness of, and adherence to institutional and interdepartmental timelines, deadlines, and processes.
  • Manage artist performance, commission and recording contracts in conjunction with Staff Attorney including drafting contracts, amending contract riders, ensuring timely execution of contracts, and disseminating necessary information to Artist Servicing.
  • Manage assigned elements of complex artistic projects, operas, festivals and initiatives from inception to performance, including but not limited to recommending and engaging artists and designers, negotiating contracts, budgeting and tracking spending, scheduling, and overseeing rehearsals and performances.
  • Support the Senior Director, Programming in overall strategic direction of programming, including advising on conductor, artist and repertoire selection.
  • Serve as part of the Association’s programming team to design, coordinate and support cross-genre programming for festivals and projects.
  • Research projects and artists as assigned, with particular emphasis on identifying new artistic talent.
  • Manage auditions and artist / composer inquiries.
  • Review and update marketing and PR materials for accuracy.
  • Maintain excellent working relationship with variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interact with artists and conductors, including entertaining as needed.
  • Share in concert duty responsibilities, including nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s Degree; graduate degree a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of classical music and artists
  • Strong skills in project management, organization, information synthesis and problem-solving
  • Proven negotiation and contract management skills
  • Ability to identify artistic quality and innovative thinking in project planning
  • Ability to manage budgets and meet goals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills at management and staff levels both formally and informally
  • Collaborative and constructive demeanor contributing to a fast-paced, high performing team
  • Ability to develop and sustain professional relationships and collaborate internally and externally for the benefit of the organization
  • Strong attention to detail with demonstrable ability to multi-task and execute plans effectively in fast paced environment
  • Flexible schedule which includes ability to provide weekend and evening concert coverage as needed in addition to business day responsibilities
  • Professional manager level desktop computing proficiency
