Animal Shelter Support Position

The City of Deer Park is seeking a support staff member for its Animal Shelter. This position offers an hourly rate of $13.85 and is located in Deer Park, TX.

The role is part of the Police Department's Animal Shelter division. The position was opened on November 16, 2023, and has the job number 00978.

The general purpose of the position is to perform routine animal care and related duties at the City's Humane Shelter. This includes taking complaints and dispatching animal control officers, cleaning and maintaining kennel areas, and performing other related shelter duties. The position works under the general supervision of the Humane Shelter Supervisor.

Essential duties and responsibilities include :

  • Taking complaints and relaying information to animal control officers.
  • Performing shelter duties including taking reports from the public, receiving animals brought into the shelter, preparing adoption paperwork, and reclaiming animals to their owners.
  • Ensuring animals are fed and have water.
  • Updating, editing, and correcting data files on the animals in the kennel.
  • Maintaining proper inventory levels of cleaning and other supplies and informing the supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Stocking inventory of food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, etc.

Minimum qualifications for the position include knowledge of basic methods and procedures of kennel cleaning and basic computer skills, such as data entry into the shelter database. A high school diploma or GED equivalent and an equivalent combination of education and / or experience are required.

Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include effective communication both orally and in writing, a reasonable skill level in mathematics, the ability to perform manual labor, the ability to establish and maintain effective relations with the public, the ability to make decisions with little or no assistance based on guidelines within departmental policy, the ability to understand and relate facts, the ability to assume responsibility and authority within the guidelines of departmental policy, and the ability to calculate and measure quantities of food per animal.

Part-time and temporary employees are eligible to become members of the Deer Park Credit Union and are covered by Unemployment Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance.
