    Scope of the Role

    The Controller will be responsible for overseeing financial activities, preparing budgets, analyzing financial data, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards including state and local income tax filings. This individual will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and work closely with the construction and service operation teams ensuring accurate accounting, costing, budget management and timely financial reporting. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in construction accounting, analytical skills, and excellent communication skills to team up with project teams and senior management.

    Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Compliance Ensure accurate, audit-ready financials delivered on time, compliant with all regulations. Provide unit-level reporting tailored to business needs.
  • AR, AP & Treasury Oversee AR collections, AP processing, and treasury management. Maintain liquidity, debt covenant compliance, and optimize excess cash.
  • FP&A & CapEx Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management. Track capital expenditures and asset depreciation.
  • Risk & Controls Assess financial risks, enforce controls, and ensure policy compliance.
  • Payroll Review payroll ensuring 100% accuracy.
  • Tax Work with third party professionals to manage various tax compliance reporting and requirements.
  • M&A Integration Work with the executive and operations team to run a seamless financial systems integration for acquisitions.
  • Background and Experience

  • 7-15 years of progressive experience in accounting roles; at least 3 years of experience outside public accounting.
  • Bachelors degree in accounting; CPA / CMA preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a small team to enhance an accounting department.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and optimize accounting processes and systems, enhancing reporting efficiency to drive informed decision-making and behavioral improvements.
  • Experience in a smaller entrepreneurial organization, new business unit, greenfield in a larger company, etc. (less than 100 employees initially) . Preferably this experience was within the construction industry.
  • Exposed to best practices / systems (most likely at a larger company) .
  • Demonstrated success in new, first-time experience(s).
  • Experience in running reporting for a company with multiple locations and lines of business.
  • Experience in managing a Work in Progress (WIP) report.
  • Treasury management experience.
  • Acquisition / integration experience is a plus but not required.
  • Technology experience with ERP (ComputerEase experience is a plus) , payroll processing system (Paycor experience is a plus) , Excel, data analysis, BI tools, etc.
  • This position is 100% in office at Cincinnati headquarters of Mechanical Optimizers.
