Job Description Basic Purpose :
The Forensic Scientist I is a key member of the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory, working under the direction of the Supervisor and / or Group Lead. This role is responsible for performing confirmation testing on donor specimens, including preparation, extraction, and instrument operation. The position ensures all testing is completed in accordance with quality standards and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities
- Maintain chain of custody and adhere to all sample handling procedures
- Follow all written procedures in departmental SOPs
- Prepare and verify new reagents, calibrators, and quality control samples
- Demonstrate sound analytical technique and accuracy
- Perform routine maintenance and operate instruments for sample analysis
- Conduct basic data review and maintain complete, legible documentation
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory workspace
- Document temperature checks of all temperature-dependent equipment
- Participate in method and / or instrument validation and procedural updates
- Notify Supervisor or Group Lead of any production or equipment issues
- Complete all continuing education and competency verification assignments
- Comply with all departmental and company policies
- Support quality control and assurance documentation
- Uphold a professional and collaborative work environment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications Education (Preferred) :
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical TechnologyAlternative majors require : semester hours in Chemistry (including in Inorganic Chemistry) semester hours in Biology related to medical sciences semester hours in Mathematics Transcript review and QA department approval to meet NYS requirementsExperience :
Minimum year of laboratory experience preferredFamiliarity with lab methods and procedures preferredPhysical & Mental Requirements :
Ability to perform repetitive motions such as pipettingCapable of standing or sitting for long durationsAbility to lift up to lbsBasic data analysis and systems proficiencyBenefits
