As Field Service Technician you would be responsible for the installation and maintenance support of High Voltage Disconnects. Our customers are electric utilities, independent power providers, and industrial customers located primarily in North America.

The Field Service Technician will travel to the customer jobsite and train the customer or contractor in the best practices for installing switches. In addition to field installations, this position serves as an engineering prototyping technician when not traveling. They would work with design engineers in building prototypes and executing test plans to further the growth of the product portfolio.

LOCATION : 4251 Turin Dr, Bessemer, AL 35020 - Up to 40% overnight travel (most weekends will be at home in the Birmingham, AL area).

  • Work primarily takes place in an offsite field environment. When not on field assignment, this position will operate in the engineering lab or on the factory floor.
  • Working from aerial lifts
  • Exposure to traffic, dust, fumes, and loud noise that are routinely encountered at external job sites and in the manufacturing plants
  • May encounter occasional stressful situations
  • Work may include responding to critical customer driven situations which may result in working some weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Demonstrating the installation of equipment on the customer's jobsite, usually a power substation. This can vary from hands-on demonstrations to classroom presentations.
  • Working on an aerial lift while following all company safety guidelines.
  • Troubleshooting installation or maintenance issues over the phone.
  • Traveling to the customer's jobsite and maintaining accurate records of expenses.
  • Creating reports detailing the work performed at each jobsite.
  • Communicating back to the engineering team on potential product improvements based on field feedback.
  • When not supporting the installation of Royal products, this individual works closely with the product development department as a lab technician.
  • Building engineering prototypes from sketch drawings or 3d models.
  • Performing mechanical or electrical tests on equipment under the direction of an engineer.
  • QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES :

  • High School diploma or GED, a technical degree or some technical school is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Field Service Technician.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have the ability to rent a vehicle on an as-needed basis.
  • Must have the ability to pass a federal background check to work on a military base and / or government station.
  • Must achieve OSHA 30 certification prior to being in the field.
  • Substation construction or electric utility experience is a big plus.
  • Fabrication experience - welding, machining, and general familiarity with fabrication tools.
  • Work regular shifts to include evenings, weekends, and / or holidays as assigned. May be subject to callback or on call and / or emergency shifts.
  • Must be a proven problem solver and have the ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Must be a mechanically inclined individual possessing general manual dexterity to operate computer, equipment, tools, controls, or other objects; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must have excellent communications skills including Active Listening, Critical Thinking, and Speaking (both internal and external customers).
  • Must possess excellent reading comprehension skills and be able to follow written and oral instructions precisely.
  • Must be a continual learner and possess mental acuity for attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Must maintain clear and accurate records at all times.
  • Must see in the normal visual range with or without correction.
  • Must hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
