Description :
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques as required in the care and treatment of inmates / residents.
The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure.
The RN attends sick calls to see inmates / residents and prepares a list of individuals to be examined.
The RN prepares the examining room and equipment.
The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
The RN contacts Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and for emergencies.
The RN examines and assesses new inmates / residents who are ill or injured.
The RN refers inmates / residents to the emergency room or appropriate healthcare facility based on their condition.
The RN performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders.
The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
The RN monitors inmate / resident hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitors nursing care delivered by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
The RN maintains a good working relationship with facility staff and nursing staff.
The RN utilizes established corporate and facility policies in making decisions.
The RN regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services.
The RN maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
The RN closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required.
The RN complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
The RN observes and records inmate / resident behavior.
The RN inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates / residents.
The RN provides health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as required.
The RN assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of records, reports, and logs.
The RN reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures along with legal and non-legal documents.
The RN reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits as necessary.
The RN facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing required medical services.
The RN prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures.
The RN takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
