Assists in the instruction and reinforcement of visual and performing arts. Provides arts instructional guidance to elementary, pre-kindergarten to sixth grade (PK-6), middle and / or high school students in the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Program. Assists in the implementation of the VAPA program's standards across various disciplines such as visual arts, digital arts, music, drama, and dance.

CURRENT VACANCIES : Various opportunities exist for permanent and on-call or long-term substitute assignments. The eligibility list will be used to fill both types of positions based on the immediate and future needs of the District. All positions are part-time, 9.25 months per year, 3 to 6.5 hours per day. Permanent positions are Monday through Friday and include full benefits for the employee only. Both permanent and substitute assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta, or Montrose).

SALARY :

Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate.

Permanent employees may earn higher rates upon successful completion of the probationary period (130 days of paid service) and may receive merit increases each year up to the maximum amount.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of visual and performing arts instruction in accordance with California State Arts Standards and applicable grade level standards. This includes the instruction of arts skills, techniques, and elements of artistic expression.

  • Supervises large groups of students during various arts activities, including visual arts, digital arts, music, drama, and dance.
  • Prepares and moves arts materials and equipment, as needed, to assist in the arts program; teaches and supervises correct use of equipment and materials.
  • Assists with activity arrangements, prepares bulletin boards and other displays of student artwork and performances as it relates to the site and arts activities.
  • Oversees and participates in classroom behavioral expectations.
  • Responds to children's questions and concerns related to arts activities.
  • Administers written or performance-based assessments.
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as maintaining files and records, typing, preparing handouts, and operating various types of audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Assists in class supervision on field trips to museums, performances, and other arts-related venues. Organizes culminating events.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Requirements :

Education :

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Meet the requirements of "Every student succeeds" (ESSA) Act by possessing an Associate's Degree or 48 semester units from an accredited institution or higher learning.
  • Background experience with Visual and Performing Arts.
  • Desirable :

  • Arts related coursework and / or certification in the arts.
  • Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

    Probationary Period : 130 days of paid service.

    Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice and a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) .

    Benefits for employees who work less than 4 hours per day include vision care.

    Salary : The beginning salary is shown on each examination announcement. New employees start at the first step. Employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.

    Holidays : Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.

    Sick Leave : One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.

    Retirement : All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

    Examination Process : A review of the applicants' experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.

    Eligibility List : Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.

    Classification : When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.

    Fingerprint Requirement : California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.

    Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination : New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.

    Accommodation : In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application.

    Physical Examination : As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination and laboratory tests, which include a urinalysis. The urinalysis includes a drug screening. These tests must be given by a District-approved physician.

    Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432) : As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reported Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.

    Veterans Preference : Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans' status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.
