Job Summary

The Special Collections Metadata Librarian serves as the primary cataloger for the Special Collections Department, providing cataloging for Aviation, Philatelic, Rare Books, University Archives, and other unique collections. Responsibilities include original and complex copy cataloging of serials, monographs, rare books, digital collections, including foreign language materials and multimedia items. The role involves developing and implementing metadata creation policies and procedures for print, electronic, and multimedia formats.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; experience with an integrated library system, preferably ExLibris' Alma; excellent communication skills.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Familiarity with metadata standards such as MARC21, RDA, LCSH, LCC
  • Experience working with OCLC and Alma systems
  • One year of original cataloging in academic libraries
  • Familiarity with cataloging Special Collections materials

Other Qualifications

Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure as defined by Texas law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Catalog resources using OCLC Connexion and upload to Alma, adhering to standards
  • Provide collection-level records for archival collections
  • Process resources in all formats within the department
  • Create original cataloging records for foreign language and archival materials
  • Participate in departmental meetings and document procedures
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned and attend professional meetings
  • Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Lift up to 20 lbs and push heavy carts
  • Prolonged standing or sitting while working on computers
