The employee in this classification will perform routine duties in support of the Building & Safety Division's operational needs and activities; to conduct building inspections; to enforce compliance with building codes, regulations and ordinances; to work with developers, architects and contractors to maintain code requirements; and to perform a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

• Performs routine duties in support of the Building & Safety Divisions operations and activities; inspects buildings and structures as assigned to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
• Examines plans and specifications for new construction, additions and alterations to buildings to determine compliance with applicable building and construction codes, ordinances and regulations.
• Inspects foundation, concrete, framing, plastering, plumbing, electrical installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements.
• May confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office; perform counter service duties; explain and interpret building requirements and restrictions.
• Enforces compliance with building ordinances, codes and regulations; locates and resolves cases of illegal construction.
• Issues construction and occupancy permits as assigned; participates in final inspection certifications.
• Coordinates inspection activities with the Fire Department; enforces safe fire and code regulations.
• Maintains files and reports regarding inspection and plan check activities and findings.
• Researches building methods and practices as necessary to properly renew plans and drawings.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists.

The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which may include a physical, drug screen, and fingerprinting.

Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility

Veterans of the armed forces, who have been discharged or released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment. A copy of your valid DD214 must be submitted on or before the final filing date in order to be eligible for Veterans Preference Credit.
