Job Description
The Extension Agent for the School of Public and Allied Health will serve as a key resource in developing, analyzing, and promoting evidence-based public health programs, interventions, and applied research across a six-county region in Metro Houston. This role involves developing, implementing, and evaluating educational outreach initiatives that address community health priorities such as chronic disease prevention, nutrition, physical activity, emotional wellness, and healthcare access.
As part of the Journey to Eminence Strategic Plan : Goal #4, which aims for PVAMU to reach R1 research status, the Extension Agent II will assist Program Coordinators and Program Leadership and faculty with research protocol design, survey administration, data collection, and assist in preparing journal articles and conference presentations. These scholarly activities will directly support and elevate the research mission of the university, ensuring that public health interventions are not only impactful at the community level but also advance the institution’s academic reputation and research portfolio.
Responsibilities :
Research & Evaluation
Design and participate in applied research projects and community-based participatory research.
Collect and analyze data to assess program effectiveness and community impact.
Prepare reports, success stories, and grant proposals to support program sustainability.
Program Development & Delivery
Co-design and deliver relevant, research-based public health education programs.
Facilitate workshops, seminars, and community events on topics such as nutrition, chronic disease prevention, mental health, and environmental health.
Collaborate with local health departments, schools, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to identify and address regional health needs.
Community Engagement & Outreach
Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, coalitions, and all local populations.
Serve as a liaison between the university, public health researchers, and the community.
Promote health and access to resources through comprehensive programming.
Professional Development & Collaboration
Stay current on public health trends, policies, and best practices.
Collaborate with other Extension Agents and specialists across disciplines.
Represent the Extension Service at regional and state-level meetings and national conferences.
Participates in CAFNR College wide events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience :
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, Nutrition, Social Work, or a related field.
Three or more years of related experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
Technical competence in appropriate subject matter and the ability to apply this knowledge to the solution of problems.
Understanding of the learning and development processes of youth and adults. Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods to provide effective learning experiences.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred qualifications :
Master’s degree in Public Health or related field.
Bilingual (English / Spanish or other languages spoken in the region).
Familiarity with Extension systems or community-based participatory research.
Experience in community health education or outreach.
Strong organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Other Requirements :
Willingness to travel within the six-county region and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
