Principal - Structural

Engineering and Client Management Responsibilities

  • Competent in managing a project team and design independently, with no oversight and high quality.
  • Excel in conducting quality assurance (QA) reviews per company guidelines for projects overseen by

others and within own team.

  • Provides direction, coordination, planning and completion of profitable engineering projects.
  • Supervise project managers throughout the project life cycle, but primarily involved in the initial set up

    and immediately prior to delivering a design.

  • Provide technical leadership and direction to project engineers and project managers.
  • Understand and track financial information related to Clients under your responsibility.
  • Represent the firm in meetings with clients and potential clients
  • Understand and explain designs and design choices to clients, if needed.
  • Demonstrate competency in utilizing functions of BQE Core software, especially financial reporting
  • and project management modules.

    Potential Responsibilities with Role Expansion

  • Responsible for the overall management of the local structural engineering division operations
  • including Training & Development, Operations Management, and Financial Performance

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of all local structural engineering projects including
  • resource assignment.

  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of all structural engineering projects managed locally which
  • exceed a set fee threshold to ensure compliance with industry and firm standards.

  • Identify training needs for all levels of structural team based on outcome of QA reviews and feedback
  • from team and facilitate training sessions to address needs.

  • Identify process and tool improvement needs based on outcome of QA reviews and feedback from
  • team. Execute improvements, utilizing staff as needed.

  • Facilitate quarterly employee reviews to help set goals, facilitate progress toward such goals, and
  • ensure individual goals align with that of the company.

  • Monitor financial performance of locally managed structural engineering projects and adjust project
  • and personnel assignments to optimize performance.

  • Stay up to date on structural engineering news and trends and incorporate into trainings and tools
  • (i.e. code updates, structural failures)

  • Consult with leadership team to adjust business development pursuits based on structural team's
  • capacity and capabilities.

    Leadership & Business Development

  • Exemplify Core Values (Pro-Team, Proactive Communications, Construction-Wise and Passionate)
  • Recruit qualified principals, project managers, engineers, and graduate engineers.
  • Manage and mentor project managers from both an engineering and leadership perspective (teaching
  • them how to be great engineers and great leaders)

  • Maintain relationships with existing clients to ensure we are their structural engineer of choice.
  • Connect with prospective clients at networking events, etc.
  • Join the board of a relevant industry organization (NAIOP, TSPE, SEAoT, etc.)
  • Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of structural engineering experience.
  • Capable of independently fulfilling roles and responsibilities of all preceding roles. (Graduate
  • Structural Engineer – Structural Engineer – Project Manager)

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE)
  • Able to demonstrate a portfolio of relevant project experience and client relationships.
