Talon Hiring Solutions has a client in the Birmingham, AL area that is looking for a highly skilled Level 2 IT Field Technician who is extremely comfortable working hands-on with IT infrastructure. This role requires someone who can confidently tear down and rebuild IT racks, identify and trace wiring, install and configure new equipment, and provide both Level 1 and Level 2 field support. This position is for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, understands how all parts of a network connect, and can walk into a client site and instantly get oriented. This role involves on-site service, infrastructure work, troubleshooting, and client-facing support.
What you will do :
- Disassemble, rebuild, and properly cable IT racks (servers, switches, patch panels, UPS, firewalls).
- Identify, trace, and label wiring, including Ethernet, fiber, coax, and low voltage runs.
- Install and configure new hardware : switches, access points, firewalls, servers, UPS units, racks, and structured cabling components.
- Perform site surveys, network mapping, and equipment assessments.
- Deploy, replace, and troubleshoot workstations, printers, VoIP phones, and peripherals.
- Handle Level 1 and Level 2 service desk tickets (networking, Microsoft tenants, workstations, VPN, printers).
- Troubleshoot LAN / WAN issues, DHCP / DNS problems, and connectivity issues.
- Configure Wi-Fi networks, including AP placement, mounting, and testing.
- Work with MSP tools (RMM / PSA) to document work, close tickets, and follow workflows.
- Assist with project work, including office buildouts, equipment refreshes, network upgrades, rack rewires, and client onboarding.
What you will bring :
3+ years of IT support experience, including time in a Level 2 / 3 or senior technician role.Hands-on experience with rack teardown / rebuild, cable management, labeling, and infrastructure refreshes.Ability to instantly identify devices in a rack (switch vs firewall vs patch panel vs UPS).Strong knowledge of how networks connect end-to-end : ISP Firewall Switch AP Endpoint.Ability to read wiring, troubleshoot cable runs, tone and identify ports, and correct mislabeled cabling.Experience installing and configuring : Firewalls (Fortinet, Ubiquiti), Switches (managed / unmanaged, VLAN configuration), Access points and Wi-Fi networks, UPS units and basic power planningExperience supporting Microsoft 365, Azure AD, email troubleshooting, and identity issuesComfortable handling Level 1 / 2 issues including onboarding, password resets, VPN fixes, desktop support, MFA issues, printer problems, and general workstation troubleshootingStrong troubleshooting skills with networking, workstations, and cloud servicesExcellent communication and the ability to work directly with clients in the fieldAbility to work on-site at various client locations.About Talon Hiring Solutions
