Position Summary :
The Patient Financial Advisor serves as a key liaison between patients and the medical practice’s billing and revenue cycle teams. This role is responsible for assisting patients in understanding their financial responsibilities, providing guidance on insurance coverage, payment plans, and financial assistance programs. The Patient Financial Advisor ensures patients receive accurate and compassionate support throughout their financial experience with the practice, helping to foster patient satisfaction while supporting timely and complete payment collection.
Key Responsibilities :
Patient Communication & Education :
- Serve as the primary point of contact for patient billing inquiries, offering clear and empathetic communication.
- Explain insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, co-pays, deductibles, and balances to patients.
- Proactively contact patients regarding outstanding balances, payment plans, or denied claims.
Financial Counseling & Payment Plans :
Evaluate patients' financial situations and recommend appropriate payment solutions.Set up and monitor interest-free payment plans in accordance with practice policy.Provide information on sliding scale programs, third-party financing, and other assistance options when applicable.Insurance & Authorization Support :
Verify insurance benefits and coverage as needed.Assist patients with understanding prior authorization requirements and insurance claim processes.Work with the billing team to resolve claim denials or discrepancies impacting patient balances.Documentation & Reporting :
Maintain accurate records of all patient financial interactions in the EHR or practice management system.Track payment plan activity and follow up on late or missed payments.Prepare daily, weekly, or monthly activity reports for review by the RCM Supervisor / Manager.Team Collaboration :
Work closely with front office, billing, and clinical staff to ensure consistent messaging and workflow.Escalate complex financial concerns to the RCM Supervisor / Manager as needed.Participate in ongoing training and process improvement initiatives related to patient financial services.Education & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in healthcare, finance, or customer service preferred.3–5 years of experience in medical billing, patient services, or healthcare financial counseling.Familiarity with medical terminology, insurance plans, and billing concepts (co-pay, deductible, EOB, etc.).Skills & Abilities :
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially in sensitive or emotional situations.Strong problem-solving ability with attention to detail.Comfortable discussing finances and collecting payments from patients.Proficient in practice management software and basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, EHR systems).Preferred Qualifications :
Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred.Experience with Epic, eClinicalWorks, or similar EHR systems.Knowledge of Medi-Cal, Medicare, and commercial payer policies.Travel : 0%
