Safety Assistant

The Safety Assistant position is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate in aviation related fields to learn about and get real life experience in working with Safety Management Systems on a part time basis. The Safety Assistant will assist the Aviation Safety Officer in tasks relating to creating and running a Safety Management System. These tasks include writing an SMS manual, ensuring that developed SMS programs and procedures meet FAA acceptance standards, and record keeping. The Safety Assistant will also help collect and interpret safety related data.

In addition to these main responsibilities, the Safety Assistant may also assist with other administrative or educational tasks as needed in the AVTE department.

This position is meant to be temporary for the duration of the Spring 2026 semester. This position is telework eligible within the state of Utah.

Responsibilities

Assisting in the development of safety programs and codifying their rules and procedures into a manual.

Compare rules, procedures and programs to FAA certification criteria and suggest improvement where necessary.

Assist in collecting and analyzing safety related data.

Other clerical tasks directly related to the safety program of flight operations.

Assist with grading and other educational tasks for AVTE classes.

Qualifications

Enrolled in or completed an aviation related degree.

Good academic record.

Strong written communication skills, with technical writing experience preferred.

Some experience in editing and auditing documents or projects is preferred.

Bonus : Experience in data collection and analysis is preferred.

The Safety Assistant works in a typical office environment with regular computer use and occasional visits to flight-operations spaces. The role involves light physical activity such as walking across campus and handling small amounts of documents or equipment. Mentally, the position requires strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, confidentiality, and the ability to manage multiple tasks while interpreting safety data and comparing documentation to FAA standards.
