Job Description
Under general direction supervises the operation maintenance and repair activities of a wide variety of pumping heating ventilating air conditioning refrigeration and process machinery and equipment in a large complex facility or in a multi-faceted facility.
Example of Major and Essential Duties :
1. Supervises subordinate staff and personally participates in the operation maintenance and repair of pumping ventilating and heating equipment including fans pumps air-conditioners and auxiliary equipment; maintains and repairs elevators and specialized kitchen laboratory and laundry equipment and facilities.
2. Operates and maintains high pressure boilers fans pumps refrigeration equipment electrical generators air compressors and various other mechanical and electrical plant machines and equipment; makes periodic inspections and tests of machinery and equipment to assure proper operation and determine the necessity for repair or maintenance; cleans paints and lubricates plant machinery and equipment as required; checks and repairs automatic temperature and humidity controls and replaces parts as necessary; repairs and replaces switches and relays on control panels.
3. Supervises the operation of automatic and manually controlled purification and water treatment equipment including pumps motors chemical feeders and filters to control the quality and regulate the flow of water through a treatment plant; conducts water analysis under general supervision to maintain water quality and proper chemical dosage in filtration plant.
4. Prepares shift schedules and work assignments for subordinate personnel; orders supplies parts and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance activities including receives records and stores large amounts of treatment chemicals; takes records and computes various meter readings reflecting plant operations including entering gauge readings and accurate water laboratory analysis readings and temperatures on operating log sheets or into a computer data system; answers emergency calls from various locations or departments in connection with heating and ventilating machinery and equipment breakdowns or malfunctions; makes emergency repairs or alterations in such cases; instructs other operating personnel in the proper operation of boilers fans heating equipment and boiler feed water treatment; contacts and communicates as required to work with contractors building tenants and / or general public.

Qualifications :
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
1. A Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for working with heating and ventilating equipment (HVAC) or other refrigeration equipment using CFCs and HCFCs; AND
2. Possession of a current Driver License; AND
Any one of the following :
3a. Five (5) years verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer
3b. Completion of a recognized four (4) year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship program AND one (1) year experience as a journey-level stationary engineer
3c. Graduation from recognized four-year Maritime Academy AND one (1) year verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer
3d. Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineers License of any horsepower AND one (1) year verifiable experience as either an unrestricted licensed Marine Engineer for merchant vessels or shore side as a journey-level stationary engineer.

Stationary Engineer Written Examination (Weight 100%) : Candidates meeting the Minimum Qualifications will be invited to participate in the in-person Stationary Engineer Core / Supervisory Exam that is designed to measure knowledge skills and / or abilities in job-related areas which have been identified as critical for positions in the Stationary Engineer classification.
In accordance with Civil Service Rule 111.11.4 inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in this examination. This multiple-choice exam will be administered either on a computer or in a paper format. The type of format will depend on the size of the qualified applicant pool. Qualified candidates will be notified of the type of exam format in their exam appointment notification. Your score will be valid and banked for three years starting from the date of the examination. This means that during this three-year time period you will not be required to re-take this test. If the selection process for a future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination and it includes this exam your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However after one year you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which the test is used. Please note that should you re-test your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent.
Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles when directed by the Human Resources Director.
Eligible List / Score Report : A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established so applicants can view the ranks final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information including names of applicants on the eligible list shall not be made public unless required by law. However an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list / score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g. as a result of appeals) as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

TWIC Cards : This position may require that the incumbent to be qualified for unescorted access to the Ports Maritime Transportation System (MTS).
