Job Summary

The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and the Center for Advanced Construction Materials (CACM) invites applications for two (2) tenure-track Assistant Professor position(s) for the Departments of Civil Engineering (CE) and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) with a focus on “Next generation of durable, smart, resilient, and sustainable materials for the infrastructure.” Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related fields. Applicants must show exceptional promise for high-quality research, teaching, professional development, and the ability to build extramurally funded research program in the strategic area of resilient and sustainable cementitious structural materials for the infrastructure. These positions shall focus in one or more of the following areas of interest (but not limited to) : (a) experimental, analytical, computational, multiscale understanding and modeling of surface and interface phenomena in cementitious and other infrastructure materials; (b) design, characterization and implementation of multifunctional nanoengineered materials; © electrochemical and chemomechanical phenomena with focus on enhancing durability and sustainability of next generation structural materials; and (d) Decoupling Concrete Manufacturing and Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

CACM houses state of the art laboratories, equipped to carry out pioneering research relevant to materials design, fabrication, and characterization across length scales. The U.S. Department of Transportation () has awarded UTA’s University Transportation Center for Durable and Resilient Transportation Infrastructure () a $10 million grant to focus on promoting the development and integration of emerging materials, technologies and tools for reducing carbon emissions associated with the extraction and manufacture of construction materials and the construction and maintenance of infrastructure.

The tentative date of starting employment is January 2024. The appointment will be in any relevant department based on the candidates’ background. These positions are part of the search for faculty members in thematic areas aligned with the research thrusts of DOT’s UTA’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026 for Research, Development and Technology; and UTA’s Strategic Plan 2025. We seek applicants who will strongly promote interdisciplinary teaching and research within one of the strategic themes of Sustainable Urban Communities, Global Environmental Impact, and Data-Driven Discovery. The key objective is to hire faculty members with outstanding qualifications, who share the University’s core values of high standards of excellence in teaching, innovative and collaborative research, and service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties include building and leading a team of Ph.D. researchers and post docs, developing externally funded research programs that yield top-tier publications, and developing research partnerships nationally and internationally. The successful candidate must have demonstrated expertise in research areas cited above and a record of research accomplishments including publications. This individual is expected to lead the university’s effort to establish a research cluster within the Center for Advanced Construction Materials Required Qualifications Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in a engineering, science or related discipline appropriate to the research focus of the center. The candidate must also have a demonstrated record of accomplishment in independent research projects, collaborating on research partnerships, and working to mentor others in research efforts.   • Strong communications skills, both oral and written Special Conditions for Eligibility Department Information UTA’s MSE department has been at the forefront of emerging materials technology by designing and discovering new materials, enabling advanced understanding of challenging material problems, and offering innovative curricula in nanotechnology, computational materials science, and advanced functional materials science. MSE at UTA is the oldest, largest and most diversified program in North Texas, with excellent research programs and facilities. The MSE department is a university-wide, interdisciplinary, graduate program with ten core materials faculty and twenty affiliated faculty spanning from physics, chemistry, and engineering.
