The Division of Student Life supports the university’s academic mission and strategic plan through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four major portfolios, the Office of the Dean of Students, Experiential Learning & Engagement, Health & Wellbeing, and Division Administration. University Health Services (UHS) is a unit within the Division of Student Life and is a nationally accredited (AAAHC) outpatient clinic providing primary care to students at the University of Oregon. All staff are required to uphold the values of the UHS. This position works in support of the University Health Services mission and vision and is consistent with UO policy. Some aspects of this position may be completed in collaboration with other University departments.

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Consultant provides urgent and non-urgent direct patient care including crisis intervention, mental health assessments and evaluations, mental health triage, development of treatment plans, and referrals in conjunction with prescribing primary care and psychiatric medical staff. The Behavioral Health Consultant assists in case management and short-term therapy for University of Oregon students independently or in conjunction with other University Health Services (UHS) staff. Decisions on health care assessment and follow-up treatment of patients affect the well-being and life of the student / patient.

This position reports to the Clinical Director of Counseling Services and serves as a member of the case management team. The Behavioral Health Consultant consults and collaborates as appropriate with the UHS clinicians in the delivery of direct patient care. This position works closely with the medical, nursing, counseling, Mental Health Access Team, and ancillary services of UHS for the coordination and delivery of patient care. This position works in collaboration with other UHS therapists to provide ongoing mental health case management, crisis intervention, and limited behavioral therapy.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and routine screening of Medicaid and Medicare Exclusion Lists. Employee loses eligibility for employment if on the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) and / or System of Award Management (SAM). In addition, employee must follow Compliance with UHS policies regarding tuberculosis screening, measles and mumps (MMR), seasonal flu, hepatitis B, and other immunization requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, or a behavioral science field AND experience as a Qualified Mental Health Professional certified by a state-approved certifying entity; OR
  • A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

In addition to one of the above qualifiers, candidates must have the following :

  • Experience using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Single Session Therapy, or similar approaches geared toward short term therapeutic approaches
  • Two years' work experience with mental health patients in crisis
  • Three years’ relevant work or experience in field of expertise
